in 2014 they voted to reject neutrality and aim for nato membership why didnt they follow austria do you think it was the russians hellbent on invading or the cia wanting to isolate russia from europe weaken it etc. could ukranians have avoided this war

The sequence is backwards. Russia would have done the drug bust before Ukraine joined NATO. Protection-racketism: a very special delirium.

NATO is basically the Costco/Trader Joe's of arms sales. It is part of the force "compatibility" requirement for membership. I doubt they were financially in a position to join. Despite Ginger Spice's claim last week that Trump held up the sell of missiles to them, in reality Ukraine wasn't ready to buy them yet.
