There is no way to do a controlled study about masks, to see if they actually do any good or not.
You would have to start with 2 groups of volunteers who included people who were both infected and not infected.
Then you would have to have them mix in the same ways, and then see what the difference in infection rates were.

There are none.

But if you are NOT doing full quarantine, what the doctors say is that the best thing to do is speed up infection among the easy hosts, so they are used up and the epidemic quickly ends.
We could have ended it in a month, last March, but accelerating infection instead of "flattening the curve".

I work on medical software, like pacemakers, so am surrounded by actual doctors all the time, and they all say that the public should not have been wearing masks after the first week, and we knew is was not lethal enough for full quarantine.
Once you do not choose the full quarantine route, then you want to speed up infection with those not at risk.
