Zone1 Another question to ponder.

That's bullshit. I gave you a decent response. You are such a liar.
"Allegory" is not a decent response. Its lazy, and its all you say.

It most certainly is a decent response. You yourself don't believe the account as it is written literally. Neither do I. So how is this not a decent response?

Holy ****. I explained to you how information was passed down 6,000 years ago. Orally. From generation to generation. These accounts were embellished for the express purpose of making them more memorable and easier to pass down because that's all they had. They wove morals into these accounts for the same reason. I even showed you that nearly every major civilization had a flood account and I even showed you it could have been the Burkle meteor which occurred about that time in that region of the globe. I couldn't be less lazy.

No it isnt. Because we are discussing the Bible. Not your own beliefs that are contrary to the book.

The whole book was passed down orally! New and Old. You pick and choose what to believe in. You are a hack.

These aren't my beliefs. It's pretty widely known and for quite some time too. Try googling, "when were biblical accounts first recognized as being allegorical?"

It's shocking that you think you are an intelligent and open minded person.

Im fully aware other people believe in that too. Just like I know you arent the only "christian" that doesnt believe the world is flat. Holy ****!

You have no idea what you are talking about when you spread that broad brush across the entire bible. And the worst part is that you have no interest in knowing it.

But putting that aside. The first eleven chapters in Genesis were orally passed down for thousands of years before they were recorded in writing. There is nothing comparable to this in the Bible.

These accounts were during Sumerian times when polytheism ruled the land and monotheists were a tiny minority.

This thread backfired on you.

nice parameters
You just keep digging

So god sent jesus (himself) to save us from himself. He did that so he could forgive sins. Atonement.
Why didnt he do that, instead of the flood? Why did he kill the entire planet and almost all the animals, when he could have just sent jesus earlier? Did the omniscient one just not think of jesus yet? Or is he just a freaking psychopath?
This is just another pondering that leaves me in the "WTF" category.
Maybe it is simply men's interpretation of events. That God is not Omnipotent and he is not alone. With factions and error creep corrections must be made.

Really? Blaise Pascal would disagree. His wager was based on the fact that the benefit of faith in God was so great that even if there were no God the benefit of believing in God outweighed the benefit of not believing in God such that the smart move would be to believe in God.

And then there's Darwin, whose principle of natural selection is based upon functional advantage. If belief in God offered no functional advantage, then according to Darwin religion would have died out long ago.
A lot less anxiety if you have faith there is a reason and a party at the end of the rainbow.

Maybe there is no end.
Maybe you cease to exist and all of that pain and misery was pointless.

Jesus came because he drew short straw again.

Why didnt he do that, instead of the flood?
The flood was already booked and they could not refund the deposit.

Why did he kill the entire planet and almost all the animals, when he could have just sent jesus earlier?
God was having a big party the next day and needed a lot of steaks for the guests.

That's part of it, sure. At least for some maybe. For me it's more about the here and now. Something happened to me that changed me. I'm at peace. I can see things clearly.

I've been giving this some thought lately. From the materialist point of view everything is pointless. From the monotheist point of view only the material is pointless.

Any thoughts on that?

your experience and built up wisdom is all you truly own. But don't you lose all that when Jesus strips you of all sin?

I'll go one step further. All we truly own is our good name. Everything else can be taken from us. But when it comes to our good name, that's something we have to give away.

Does Jesus strip us of sin? Sin is an artifact of a material existence. Spirit has no need for sin.

But don't you believe it is logical that a materialist - someone who believes only in a material existence - has to believe that everything is pointless?
