So how many of you get mail on Saturday? If not what about stopping USPS delivery on Saturdays?

Stopping the outgoing mail on Saturday and Sunday wouldn't be a big deal. Now having the assortment shift people work on the weekend in order to keep the mail organized and assorted for the coming delivery on Monday would be necessary.

What, so maybe it puts a few more envelopes in the bag for each route driver's delivery stop come Monday right ?

You are right, that I probably don't realize the extent of the load or what type of load is being presented in the situation, but can't the load be limited to envelope delivery for USPS while UPS and FEDEX take the package delivery completely over ?
yes it would a big deal, mail keeps moving forward until it gets to the carriers case.......and who are the assortment shift people?.....and you have no idea how much mail would be there on monday...put a few more envelopes in a bag?....what does that mean?....and do you know who the biggest customers of the USPS is?.....its UPS and Fed-X...the PO delivers a whole bunch of both of their parcels...so much for giving them the parcel business....

Well nothing can be changed without reshaping and rearranging a system in order to make it more efficient for taxpayers.

Sounds like a huge growth opportunity for private carriers in the package carrier part of it, while cutting back on the cost and burden that is being laid upon the taxpayer in a socialist way, otherwise in order to try and keep the out of control behemoth bellowing out huge plumes of steam from burning our precious currency like it's honey to a bear.

Oh, and by the way what about the poor taxpayer that is being strapped with a portion of the high price of a super sized government mail operation, when the person might not even use the mail other than receiving a letter now and again ? Is it fair that he or she don't get to see government run more efficiently when it comes to the cost that taxpayers are forced too pay ?

Correct, but if USPS no longer offered the service, then that would be the end of story on choosing them as a package carrier. Your customer's would have to use the services available to them.

I'll take things that'll never happen for $200, Alex.

The USPS does offer Saturday delivery. When/if they stop, then get back to me then.
I'm fine with the USPS, FedEx and UPS. I don't care who or what delivers to my door. As long as it gets here.

For the record, I've had lost packages, packages arriving late or delivered to the wrong address from all carriers. Not one is actually better than the other.

tax dollars dont go to the PO....they are basically self sufficient....and i dont use social services, should i have to pay taxes for that?...

One question for defenders of Saturday envelope delivers to your mail box if the “system “ is designed for 6 days why was Sunday exempt? If Saturday so important how was Sunday delivery to your mailbox excluded? Again folks I wasn’t describing package deliveries but mail delivered to your mailbox. So concentrate on that distinction ok.

And there is little competition among private carriers; only a couple of companies big enough to operate globally.

No wonder the POST OFFICE SUCKS.

Look how the leader behaves.

Shameless. What a POS.

So how do we make government work better and be more efficient with an attitude like that ? 😆

The post office has become self sufficient ? When did this happen ? No taxes are pumped into it ?

Deflection.. Stick to the core of his question concerning efficiency and rational concerning the government postal service operation.

nope....they can borrow from the treasury and they pay it back by law.....
, beginning in the 1970s, the Postal Service largely stopped receiving any taxpayer money. Postal operations are instead funded by sales to you, the postal customer. Now it depends almost entirely on sales to keep the lights on.

The US Post Office largely stopped delivering mail on Sundays in 1912 when Congress added a rider to a funding bill that prohibited post offices from opening on Sundays for mail delivery; this effectively ended widespread Sunday mail delivery for over a century.

Key points about Sunday mail delivery:
  • Historical context:
Pressure from religious groups advocating for Sabbath observance contributed to the decline of Sunday mail delivery in the late 19th century.

  • Current situation:
While most regular mail is not delivered on Sundays, the USPS does deliver certain packages on Sundays, primarily Priority Mail Express items and packages for Amazon, due to a partnership with the company.

I only check my mail every one-two weeks, unless I happened to have ordered something being shipped by USPS. Even then, I know exactly when it’s arrived thanks to tracking apps.

Zero reason to check it unless I have a specific reason to think something in particular is coming by mail.

The whole concept of checking for daily mail is quickly becoming an “old person” thing

OK, so why the hearing on capital hill where the post master general covered his ears so he couldn't hear the truth coming at him ?

Junk mail should also be a thing of the past, so no more of that burden should continue bothering the carriers.

Talking about Saturday now, not Sunday.
