So how many of you get mail on Saturday? If not what about stopping USPS delivery on Saturdays?

According to recent USPS data, the Postal Service spends approximately $5.8 million per day on salaries and benefits for mail delivery, which represents the average daily cost associated with delivering mail.

Stop delivery on Saturdays would save over $300 million. Why not? I don't need it on Saturday!

We get mail seven days a week, since USPS delivers packages every day.

Yes, the United States Postal Service (USPS) distinguishes between mail envelopes and packages:

  • Mail envelopes: Include large envelopes and poly mailers.

  • Packages: Also known as parcels, these are mailpieces that are too large to be a letter or flat.
  • A mailpiece must be flat-size or larger, if rigid, or over 3/4" thick to be classified and priced as a package (parcel
According to the USPS, letters are typically delivered on Saturdays but not on Sundays, meaning regular mail delivery is only from Monday through Saturday.

So the distinguishing feature is "envelopes" are delivered 6 days not Sunday. Packages 7 days. Difference:
envelopes are generally STAMPED while packages are at minimum of
  • USPS Ground Advantage: Prices start at $5.40 at a Post Office. Packages up to 15.999 oz are priced by the ounce, rounded up to 4 oz, 8 oz, 12 oz, and 15.999 oz.Packages heavier than 15.999 oz are charged by the pound.

  • Priority Mail Return: Prices start at $9.65 at the Post Office.

  • First-Class Mail: Prices start at $0.73 at the Post Office.
NOW do you understand the difference? Envelopes i.e. delivered mail is 6 days... packages every day directly to recipient!

It is subsidized for a reason. You never see UPS and the rest bid on the daily home deliveries for a reason; they just like skimming the gravy off the top, one of the reasons the Post Office loses more money. And, UPS and the others lose stuff all the time. I've never had the Post Office lose anything of mine, ever; been late few times but never lost.

They can't. They are not ALLOWED to deliver daily mail.

You're one of the lucky ones, they've lost medications from the VA, misplaced packages and delivered them to the wrong address, sometimes they find their way to the proper address, but not always.

The USPS incompetence is legendary. (My personal record was fifteen days for "2-3 day" mail.) Mad Mike Williamson's latest postal debacle, a few weeks ago...

Dear US Postal Fuckups: It is 130 miles from Plymouth, IN to me, south of Indy. The PRIORITY MAIL ENVELOPE dropped off there on the 2nd arrived in Indianapolis on the 3rd. It has now spent an ENTIRE ******* WEEK "Moving through the network" and not arriving here.(Note: this was posted on 12/10.) There's also a package that arrived in Indianapolis on the 6th, which is "moving through the network" and not arriving here.
A package I sent to TX spent 15 ******* days "Moving through the network" in San Antonio, being "processed at" the same location three times a day for 15 ******* days.
I understand your hiring standards are lower than McDogFood's, but I would hope basic literacy would be part of that, especially when these are computer printed labels with bar codes so your mouthbreathers don't even need to look at them.

He's fairly pissed, because it's a valuable item he can't replace.

Yeah, I had a local USPS supervisor email me a letter that they lost a package, so I could provide it to the vendor, the package was delivered to my home later that day. She was embarrassed to hell to find out they were in possession of the package all along. One of her yahoos didn't scan it properly.

My anecdotal story is they never lost anything of mine, or from anybody I know. I'm sure in Yankeeland or Cali it's different, and nothing works up there. All they can find are mouthbreathers and low IQ types.

Never saw any news where the private companies eve wanted to bid on providing them. They just like the package and local stuff in the big cities, the easy low hassle stuff.

Agree, just give the delivery driver's and other chain worker's in the system the weekend off. It's truly not that important that the mail doesn't run on those two days. Private carriers are welcome to have those day's in order to cover packages. USPS shouldn't be in competition with private carrier's anyway, because it is a service provided by government for U.S. citizen's, and paid for by their taxes and the stamps program to deliver mail or important documents.

if you worked there and saw how the mail flows you would not say such nonsense...

Stopping the outgoing mail on Saturday and Sunday wouldn't be a big deal. Now having the assortment shift people work on the weekend in order to keep the mail organized and assorted for the coming delivery on Monday would be necessary.

What, so maybe it puts a few more envelopes in the bag for each route driver's delivery stop come Monday right ?

You are right, that I probably don't realize the extent of the load or what type of load is being presented in the situation, but can't the load be limited to envelope delivery for USPS while UPS and FEDEX take the package delivery completely over ?

I don't tell my suppliers how to ship their parts.
Correct, but if USPS no longer offered the service, then that would be the end of story on choosing them as a package carrier. Your customer's would have to use the services available to them.
