USPS begins cash conservation plan Temporarily suspends payments to Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS)

Changes made by Postmaster General DeJoy before 2020 election harmed US Postal Service, judge rules

In mid-2020, the USPS cut back on the number of mail sorting machines it used, and also hindered the ability of workers to make extra postal trips that would result in them being paid for overtime. The changes – which Democratic politicians heavily criticized at the time because they dovetailed with then-President Donald Trump’s vocal opposition to mail-in balloting during the election – hurt on-time mail delivery.

DeJoy had made the changes without consulting the regulatory agency that oversees the post office first,
Judge Emmet Sullivan wrote in his 65-page opinion Thursday.

“The evidence demonstrates that [the states and localities] suffered harm by impeding their ability to combat the spread COVID-19, impeding their ability to provide safe alternatives to in-person voting,” and by imposing costs and administrative burdens on state and local governments, Sullivan found.

Key Ethical Concerns and Conflicts of Interest

  • XPO Logistics Ties: DeJoy was a former executive and major shareholder of XPO Logistics, a logistics firm that does business with the USPS. Documents show USPS paid XPO over $286 million since 2013, with contracts continuing after his appointment.

  • Failed Immediate Divestment: Upon taking the role, DeJoy did not immediately sell his stake in XPO Logistics. He held at least $30 million in XPO stock, which continued to secure business with the agency
when i worked there mail sorting machines were transferred to different mail sorting installations once in a while.... some shut down for maintenance and it would be for a few days, those machines are huge.......but were did you get this?....also hindered the ability of workers to make extra postal trips that would result in them being paid for overtime......we got paid OT all the time it was hard not to run into OT.......i dont know what an extra postal trip is....

no small post office can be closed solely for operating at a deficit

solely , solely , solely
look they shut them down whether they made money or not...they can use any excuse they want....the only way to stop them is to get your congress person to stop them if they can....

The Postal Service has informed the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) of its intention to temporarily suspend its employer’s contributions for the defined benefit portion of the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) to conserve cash and preserve liquidity due to its ongoing, severe financial crisis.

“There will not be any immediate detrimental impact to our current or future retirees if normal FERS cost payments are temporarily withheld,” said Postal Service Chief Financial Officer Luke Grossmann. “The risk to the Postal Service and the American public from insufficient liquidity for postal operations dramatically outweighs any longer-term risk to the pension funds from not making the currently due payments. We will continue to transmit to OPM employees’ contributions to FERS and will also continue to transmit employer automatic and matching contributions and employee contributions to the Thrift Savings Plan. It must be noted that our pension systems remain much better funded than other agencies.”

The Postal Service pays about $200 million every other week to OPM for the FERS annuity. Suspension of payments, effective April 10, will free about $2.5 billion in the current fiscal year.

And make their financial problems $2.5B worse next year.

ETA: As a reminder, the USPS is buying 66,000 electric vehicles at a program cost of $145,454 per unit.

The USPS is nothing but a bloated jobs program.
As I have posted MANY TIMES, The government sponsored FERS pension plan needs to be sunsetted just as nearly all private sector pension plans were sunsetted many years ago because they are a massive cost that keeps growing.

DeJoy Says USPS Won't Install More Than 600 Removed Mail Sorting Machines

  • The "Elimination of Extra Trips" Policy: Starting around July 10, 2020, a "Do It Now" initiative was deployed to eliminate almost all late and extra trips, which were previously used to ensure mail was delivered on time.

Policy Objective: The initiative intended to stop the practice of running extra trucks or delaying scheduled trips to ensure that all mail was delivered, a strategy previously used to ensure on-time delivery. Under the new directive, trips were required to depart exactly on time, regardless of whether all mail had been loaded.

Yeah, how dare Gov't employees expect to live comfortably in retirement, private sector sure can't since Corps cut defined benefit pensions right?

THE RACE TO THE BOTTOM CONTINUES AS BILLIONAIRES PAY A SMALLER PERCENTAGE OF THEIR INCOMES THAN PLUMBERS, TEACHERS OR DOG GROOMERS, IN TAXES

the PO delivers many of their packages the so called last mile...
Yes but that too may change by long shot. There are many independent delivery services out there nowadays which can carry the load. Even during Christmas, I’ve seen no more than 15 packages vs. hundreds in the past. USPS lost revenues there. As for packages services, Amazon is dominating that area except for large size items. That too will change at some point when Amazon can work out the logistics.

Yes, how dare the government makes the average person pays for their own healthcare and retirement savings whereas government employees have free healthcare, spending taxpayers’ money like there’s no tomorrow, and big pension paid for by the people. I’ve lost track how many times Democrats promised voters free healthcare, low prices, affordable housing, and retiring comfortably.

I read were Amazon is rethinking their contract (I think it's like 6 billion) with the USPS. My PO is no longer delivering Amazon packages. Amazon has it's own delivery trucks tooling about town now.
They already did, they cut twenty percent of their shipping via the usps

I live comfortably in retirement on my 401Ks provided by my private sector employers and my investments. Your response is typical knee jerk rubbish. Come back when you actually THINK about what I said. Or not, that works too.

boxes are removed if they are constantly vandalized, which many are,and many are not being used, they get removed too...

Some have even been STOLEN.

the post office doesnt take tax dollars...and what you are talking about i have never seen that...

It's quite common-last few years before retiring, work a bunch of overtime. VERY common, the hacks in Massachusetts have been gorging at that trough for decades!

were i live we have a neighborhood on line communication were we can tell everyone whats happening....misdeliveries by Amazon is a big deal here....i had my neighbors packages 3 dam days in a row...

My mother's last few mail carriers were useless. Non-delivery, misrouted mail, late mail. I changed my mailbox because my carrier WOULD NOT CLOSE IT, and I was sick of soggy mail.

8 million empty buildings Dopers Specks 👳‍♀️and Kuuuuns 🦝 on UI? Mailman living next door sod gange to the ladies.

which is something the carriers have wanted for a long time...

delivery is only as good as the person doing the delivering...Amazon out here in vegas makes a lot of delivery mistakes.....like i said i had my neighbors packages 3x in a row...and what independent service are you talking about?...most dont have the infrastructure to "carry" the load...

'Privatizing' it will just mean mailing a letter will go up to $50 for local and $500 to mail something to Az from New Mexico. A lot of small businesses rely on the USPS. And if you've seen the quality of people who will subject themselves to Amazon's ,UPS,, and FEdEx's management style, then you're in for a treat, and not a good one. Around here they literally get halfway across the yard, throw the package the rest of the way take their delivery pic and race off. That is what constitutes 'efficiency'... the companies probably hand out prizes to drivers who destroy the most contents.

They are using 'sub-contractors' now, not regular employees., at least around here.

The past abuses were easily fixed without destroying the whole system. Some functions just don't 'privatize' well, just a fact.

they started the temp thing around 20 some odd years ago....those guys work 3 months and if they are decent they will give them another 3...and thats it....and they get paid a lot less.....we told them temp people dont cut it...they dont give a shit...

A member on ARFCOM had a machinegun stolen (registered mail) at a Detroit hub.

A mint condition transferable C&R Original IMI UZI disappeared in Detroit on Feb 6th. All the USPS has to say about it is to file the insurance claim. I'm working with State Representative Latta and Senator Moreno on getting some answers. - Bigbore

There's a clear version on a machinegun site.....Talk about a cluster!

They caught the thief but the UZI is now involved in a federal investigation of some type.

His insurance claim was denied twice and now they don't know where the UZI is!
