Homeschooling: Your Views, Please

Worry about your own kids.

As the great Hillary Clinton once said.....it takes a villiage

Yes, I will worry about your kids. If you are beating them, I will worry. If they are starving or in rags, I will worry. If they are being deprived of an education, I will worry

And I will insist that the villiage do something about it

The great Hillary can go **** herself.

But a VILLAGE is LOCAL government.

If Hilary says "it takes a Village to raise a Child," she is not referring to the US Congress or a State's Department of Education.

I vehemently disagree with you here. That is exactly what Hillary is referring to - the federal government. Like all Dumbocrats, she has to convince the people that nothing can survive (education, healthcare, hell - even life) without the federal government. It's her cash cow and she wants to make sure the money and power keep flowing towards her.

Well that is the RW interpretation.

Interestingly it seems to be the LW interpretation as well, since the literal interpretation (which could not mean anything BUT an actual local village government since there were no centralized authorities when the African saying originated).

You are both incorrect in believing Hillary took the African saying, which probably means that local government is the best way to assist in the raising of children, and "interpreted" it to mean that ALL government is the best way to raise children, including the monolithic Federal bureaucracies beloved by both Democrats and Republicans:

Some critics of public schools urge greater competition among schools as a way of returning control from bureaucrats to parents and teachers. I find their argument persuasive and I favor promoting choice among public schools, much as the President’s Charter Schools Initiative encourages.

Charter schools are public schools created and operated under a charter. They may be organized by parents, teachers, or others. The idea is that they should be freed from regulations that stifle innovation, so they can focus on getting results. By 1995, 19 states had enacted charter school laws about 200 schools have been granted charters.

The Improving America’s Schools Act, passed in October 1994 with the President’s support, provided federal funds for a wide range of reforms, including launching charter schools. Federal funding is needed to break through bureaucratic attitudes that block change and frustrate students and parents, driving some to leave public schools.
Source: It Takes A Village, by Hillary Clinton, p.244-245 Sep 25, 1996

Interesting that both LW and RW choose to ignore the quote above because it does not fit the meme either ideology has been spoon-fed from popular media sources either side has been trained to parrot.

No offense to teachers, the absolutely most noble profession, but I wish home schooling had been an option. I hated every minute of school from literally the first day of first grade to the day of HS graduation. Loathed, detested, pick your verb. It's a cookie cutter factory that squelches creativity, destroys personality and visits authoritarian bullshit on innocent children that never needed it. It grinds out obedient drones of lobotomized character and traumatized psyche. I never want to go through another experience like that as long as I live.

So uh, I guess I vote "yes". :)

Most Noble profession???? Even more so then laying down your life for your freedom???? Oh yea I forget I am talking to a progressive, they hates soldiers

Although I though we'd given you a door prize for ad hominum posting of the off topical, I see it wasn't enough to prevent a second attempt.

Sadly, the USMB prize budget for such infantile behavior doesn't amount to much more than coupons from Dairy Queen.

Let me tell you about Lee Krish....

I was OK in Arithmatic but I struggled in seventh and eighth grade with more advanced Mathmatics. Lee Krish was my Ninth Grade Algebra teacher.

It was 1970 and Krish dressed in a suit and still wore a flat top haircut. Yes, he wore a pocket protector. I never saw him smile. He never started a class with a hello or an acknowledgement we were there. He would stand up and start writing on the blackboard in chalk. You had better keep up because he would spin around and challenge you to come to the board.
I was scared to death of him
The first two marking periods, I struggled. But then something strange happened......I got it. I understood Algebra. I got to the New York State Regents Algebra exam and scored 100.
From that point on, I got advanced Mathematics
I went on to College and became an engineer. It was not till I was in my 30s that I figured how much the hated Mr Krish influenced my future

I love my parents, but if I was homeschooled, I never would have "got it ". My parents could have taught me, but they never would have sparked my interest in Mathmatics.

Seems to me you figured it out on your own.

I am for homeschooling IF the proper subjects are being taught.

I am from Missouri where the film "Jesus Camp" was largely based and I remember seeing that lesson on science that kid was getting and it was appalling. How that is considered science education is ridiculous.

You don't get to change Pythagoras' theory or Evolution because it might be blasphemous to your religion. The facts are the facts and that's what children should be taught. You're entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts.

Still trying to figure out how you calculate that it's any of YOUR business to decide "the proper subjects" for OTHER people's children.

Lemme break it down for you, chum. If you weren't in the delivery room either sweating to squirt that kid out, or having your hand broken by the person squirting the kid out, you don't have a vote. It's none of your business. Butt the hell out and go produce and raise your own rugrats.

Case closed.

We have a social responsibility to ensure that our children have a proper education.

Public education works. The problem is people don't want to properly fund it.

The problem is that "funding it" has been redefined largely by entities that have no interest in the local opinion of how education should be accomplished.

For example, MUCH funding is Mandated in support of students whose parents are not US citizens.

Another: MUCH funding is Mandated to "educate" mentally retarded people.

Short bus Maybe you need to learn what off topic means.

Yeah I really don't see the connection between a 1970s chalk board, and homeschooling algebra in 2014......unless the point was to correlate antiquated teaching methods with success.

Perhaps all teachers should now be required to get flat to haircuts and wear suits?

Absolutely they are. Why, think what you could have become had you been exposed to one. As it is you're condemned to tapatalk trolling in between ringing up packs of cigarettes at a convenience store. Be proud. And when you're done ringing up that bag of Twinkies, bite my ass.

No they are not the most noble of professions. Too ******* bad for you I honestly think Soldiers and police officers and EMTs and fire fighter and several more professions to be more noble.

Anything to keep our children away from the influence of the radical Leftist teacher's union.

You guys don't have to do anything I ask of you, but it would be nice if you wouldn't damage this thread by turning it into a personal battlefield. I can't really stop you, but that sort of general respect would be welcome.

Back to this topic of homeschooling, bullies and all of the bad behavior that comes with the public school system is why my parents homeschooled me. I was bright and extremely energetic because of ADHD, and kids were cruel and just as unrestrained. Highschool from what I've experienced and know, is even worse in the public school system. Drug abuse, rampant sex, bullying, hazing, peer pressure, disrespect, getting killed while doing something stupid, and the list goes on.

I didn't have those valuable experiences, but I did walk away with stellar grades and a razor sharp edge against my public school competition when it came to college. My father created the problem of not giving me the beneficial socialization with other kids my age that I needed, because he didn't want to spend even a cent on his family for nonessentials. I suspect that is the exception when it comes to homeschool families. There are ways to keep those kids engaged in all manner of social activities without all the crap you find in public schools. I for one would like to homeschool my children, and send them out to help the elderly in facilities (where allowed), help in planning and carrying out festivities in the community, going out and helping and socializing with various people, etc. I will protect my children, though, because there are bad things out there that I don't want them to be exposed to. And it's not good, those things.

Although it will probably be a decade or so before I have teenagers of my own, I'm starting to map out plans, plans in which they'll keep their little hands active and out of trouble. I'll have well-developed relationships with some elderly neighbors, and me and them will agree to have my children help with gardening, cleaning, housework, etc. Send them out to meet, help, and grow accustomed with people. I'd rather have them on their little (or big?) feet doing stuff to stay busy and help others, than playing video games (like out of controlled addiction to them) or getting into trouble with bad influences.

Debating the issue is what we do. You dont like how we debate sounds to me like it is more a problem with you then us.

Debating and flinging poo are two different things. Debating requires far more mental energy than containing a few spatterings of worldview within an insulting post. Besides, debating is especially known as being formal. That excludes partisan trolling. "Nyah nyah you're a stinky tee-potty" and such does not and never will qualify as debating in any serious realm of thought out there. :D:lol:

Thanatos, I don't stoop to that level. Ask anyone here if I troll people over politics or otherwise. Those who know me know otherwise. I'll wait. This isn't about you, or me. It's about homeschooling, and I'm humbly asking for people to have the respect and common courtesy to not trash other people's threads.

If you want to debate, let's debate. Do you have any differences on homeschooling?

That's not debate. Debating is the exchange of ideas, and having them tested, formally. Political, social, religious, philosophical, scientific, and moral. Do you share my views on homeschooling, or differ a bit? Are there things in homeschooling you believe could be improved on? If you share my beliefs on homeschooling then, hey, we agree on something. So let's come up with ways to make it even better for the next generations.
