I did not claim that Peter was the rock. I simply quoted some verses from Matthew 16 and you assumed from my post that I was saying that Peter was the rock. Here is what the context of Matthew 16 is:

You are right that God the Father and Jesus Christ, who are one God, are the rock. Jesus asked his disciples, "Who do men say that I the Son of Man am?". They gave him various answers. He then asked, "But whom say ye that I am?". Simon Peter answered that he was Christ, the Son of the living God. From this answer Jesus replies and tells Peter that flesh and blood did not reveal this knowledge unto him but that it came by revelation directly from God the Father. He then tells Peter that upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Revelation from God only comes from the Father and Son and Holy Ghost but can be relayed to us from messengers from God. Jesus built his church upon the principle of revelation coming directly from the Father or Son. It did not come through flesh and blood but through God. Jesus would build his church upon the rock of revelation which comes from God the father or Son or Holy Ghost and not from other men's thoughts and false creations. Thus those who preach that continuing revelation has ceased in the church of Jesus Christ are teaching false doctrine. Jesus simply told his lead apostle Peter that upon this principal of revelation from the rock I will build my church. Once Jesus passed away and was resurrected and taken into heaven, Peter was to lead the church on earth through continuing revelation from God. But the purpose of my post was to show that Peter was also given a power to bind on earth and in heaven. This allowed him to use his priesthood as the lead Apostle to seal certain things on earth such as marriage to be binding also in heaven.

The Apostleship of Paul was an exceptional choice by the Lord Christ........Paul was to be appointed the Apostle of the Gentile nations. (2 Tim. 1:11) Paul declares he witnessed the resurrection of Jesus Christ.......Paul was born out of time (personally appointed by Jesus Christ) ".........Then last of all He was seen by me also, as one born out of time." -- 1 Cor. 15:3-10

Even if you are gullible enough to believe Joseph Smith's lie..........that Apostleship ended with the death of Smith, unless you are claiming that every apostle after Smith was alive and walked among the Christ in the early 1st century......or the Lord personally left His throne in heaven to appoint further apostles. If there are true apostles of Jesus Christ today.........they should be capable of using signs and wonders (miraculous gifts) to confirm the word of God. (Hebrews 2:4)

But do we see these apostles in any church throughout time up until the present? NO! This is because the church fell away into a world wide apostasy and necessitated a restoration of the church. Even those who protested against the Catholic church could see that it was the same church that Jesus established. But simply breaking off from an apostate church did not give them the power or authority that was once had with the apostles and prophets once had in Christ's true church. Which of the protestant churches have apostles and prophets to teach them until we all come to the unity of the Faith? They don't.

An apostle is a special witness of Jesus Christ and his resurrection. But this does not mean that you had to be living on the earth at the time Jesus resurrected. Paul had a vision of Jesus and thus became a witness that he was risen from the dead and was resurrected. Jesus can appear to anyone and witness to them that he is resurrected today and even have them touch him. Jesus appeared to Joseph Smith and others when he restored his church again upon the face of the earth. He continues to appear unto his apostles and they are special witnesses today of his resurrection and that he leads his church today. When Jesus makes his second coming to the world, he will have already set up his church and called apostles and prophets and they and his church will be caught up to meet him in the clouds.
