Right now, they're gearing up for a Black Heritage Day celebration in downtown Tampa (Florida). The event is supposed to be for about 2 hours, with food, music, and some speakers. It was announced on Fox 13 News, and maybe on some other TV news channels too.

I'm a little curious though. What if there were to be a White Heritage Day celebration ? Perhaps with classical music, bluegrass music, country & western, and maybe some speakers noting achievements of some famous white people. Would this be announced on the TV news shows, too ? Would it be considered acceptable, as the Black Heritage Day ?

I'm of white European (Danish) and Hispanic (Central American) ancestry. So, what about if we had a Hispanic Heritage Day, too ? Good to go ?

My theory is that this "race" thing is the result of involuntarily importing people from the rather large African continent, where darker skin tones are the norm, by lumping them all together without regard to where they came from on the continent and the language, customs, and traditions of the local areas they came from. They became known only as "black." I am guessing that many have not, or cannot trace their roots to know what cultures their individual ancestors came from. I am guessing that many "black" people would like to know that their ancestors came from Ghana, Nigeria, Chad, or the the like, or were Zulu or Tutsi, whatever. So what can they do, if not having events to celebrate being of African origin as a group?

Whereas I, who I guess can be called "white," have had the opportunity to know the traditions of my Irish and Russian ancestors because they somewhat voluntarily came here, although perhaps fleeing uncomfortable conditions in their home countries. I always say that I come from two great cultures that cry in their booze and write very, very long novels.

There is something special in every culture. By noting my background, I do not mean any disrespect of anyone with roots in any other culture, European or otherwise. I like learning about other cultures. Ethiopians are wonderful people, with great food, music, and friendliness. I love Greek church festivals, because their food is delicious and they certainly know how to party! I loved dancing to zydeco when Cajun was featured at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival. I miss the now-late Cajun chef, who always added an "un-YON." And, of course, there is soul, both musically and food-wise, the blues, and Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley.

In short: there is no reason to fight amongst yourselves. Go out out, explore, celebrate.
