I read a nice piece this morning that gave the worst first years of presidents --- he led off with William Henry Harrison, who spent his first year dead, because he gave a two-hour inaugural speech, longest on record, in the cold wind, and this worked out poorly. He also detailed a lot of how bad Clinton's first year war: remember the "you're getting two presidents for one!" idea and Hillary heading up a total "reform" (socialization) of the health system, which quickly failed. And a bunch of other issues, like "Don't ask, don't tell," and so on.

But his first prize went to Abraham Lincoln. The day after Lincoln's election, South Carolina seceded; when seven states leave the union before you're even sworn in, you just know you aren't off to a good start.
