Donald Trump has launched a one-sided war of words with the federal judge who is presiding over two of the legal actions against Trump University and Mr. Trump himself. Judge Curiel is precluded from commenting by the requirements of his position, so Trump's assault is extremely unfair, regardless of the validity of his claims. As to the validity of those claims:
What's Behind the Attacks on Judge Gonzalo Curiel?
So, what in world is this man doing? How does this make sense? He is, so far, completely on his own. McConnell, Ryan, Gingrich, are all condemning him, so there appears to be no political upside. This will hardly make his legal case easier, though one can hope that the judge possesses qualities of emotional maturity that Trump can only dream of possessing, and will still be able to act impartially.
1- Is there some political advantage to Trump's actions which have so far eluded observers?
2- Is there some judicial advantage to subjecting the judge to public condemnation?
3- Is there any validity to Trump's claims of unfair treatment, and any way to draw a direct line between the judge's rulings and his Mexican heritage? If so, why hasn't Trump filed any motions to disqualify the judge?
4- Is this some kind of damage control? A way to deflect or mitigate the effect of these drip-drip releases pertaining to the many accusations of fraud that he is facing?
