I don't know if you were even alive back then but Nixon proposed a bill to combat rising inequality in the welfare system and afford income assistance as a basic human right. Unfortunately he changed his mind at the last minute ( probably when he crunched the figures for it ). At any rate this is an incredible and largely forgotten tale of just how close the U.S. came to wiping out poverty altogether. FYI, just thought you'd care to know that fact.
