Since when did politicians get the right to lecture us?

Have you noticed that Mitt Romney thinks that Trump will bring in 'trickle-down racism'. That is his opinion but then he finishes it off with saying "I don't think..." we should be a racist country. OK. Most people already think that but why do politicians think they have a right to lecture Americans on how they think the country should act and behave. Most of us are adults and should be free to make our own choices in lives without politicians inserting their opinion of how we should act. Maybe we should lecture them on how bad the deficit and national debt is?
