News reports are reporting that Don Trump purchased a signed Tebow football helmet at a charity auction and paid $12,000 for it with his own charity's funds. In fairness to Trump, the funds did go to the charity holding the auction, but the whereabouts of the helmet has not been provided by the Trump organization. This is a developing story, hence the question mark in the thread title. It appears that what happened to the helmet will determine the legality of the purchase. Was it kept in his private collection or did he donate it to some other charity for re-auction?

Well this seals the deal for me. Anyone who pays $12,000 for a Tim Tebow helmet has serious judgment issues and should never be considered for the office of president.

News reports indicate it is valued at about $400 on today's market.

Sounds like a Trump business doesn't it? Pay top dollar then file bankruptcy.
Sports memorabilia is tricky and often a gamble. The key to this story is what happened to the helmet. On the face, Trump made a nice donation. If he kept the helmet for his personal collection, there may be a problem, not matter how much the value decreased or increased. One explanation could be that the helmet is still the property of his charity and being held by the charity for safe keeping. Probably be hard to prove otherwise.

What sort of a moron would even write this garbage?

Let's walk through this slowly...

Trump has a charitable foundation, the purpose of which is to accumulate donations - mainly from other people - then distribute the money to charity.

Trump used the funds of the charitable foundation to buy a worthless item from the SGKomen foundation, which, if you are keeping track, is a strong supporter of ABORTION RIGHTS.

The worthless item is irrelevant, as is its whereabouts. The point is that the Trump foundation made a charitable donation, as it is intended to do.

The very idea that Trump did this so that he could get his personal hands on this "valuable" bit of sports memorabilia is so ridiculous as to be a joke.

It is the same as if he paid the money for a sheet of toilet paper. IT was a charitable donation - entirely legal and appropriate. The helmet itself is probably sitting in a landfill somewhere, which is also appropriate.

There is always an excuse for Trump when he says or does something stupid or gets caught lying. Trump has publicly displayed his private collection of helmets and other sports memorabilia. At the time of purchase, the Tebow helmet had a high value, close to what he paid. The insinuation of some of the reporting, the conservative publication The Hill for example, is that an illegal misappropriation may have occurred whereby Trump benefited from the helmet and used it for his personal collection, with his charity paying the bill.

I heard that when OJ Simpson get out of prison, Trump is going to hire him the break in and get it back. OJ won't drop the ball again!

Why would trump's Charity buy this football helmet in the First Place if they had no plans to turn it around and sell it?

Trump used his charity to donate money to the Attorney General of Florida and the AG in Texas to get the charges they were considering against Trump University on behalf of Texas and Florida citizens that felt they were scammed by Trump University....DROPPED....

Can Charities legally donate to politicians?

Seems like the only crooked one using a Charity for simply personal use, is not Hillary, but Trump himself.
