To a lot of non-US citizens, the population appears to be more divided than ever. There seems to be a fundamental lack of respect for people with different political views, and the rethoric is often hateful and demeaning.
Is this a reflection of reality, or is it a social media effect? Do americans really despise each other this much? Will whoever wins your next election be able to unify your people, or is this the beginning of a downward spiral?

Very doubtful. While the two narcissistic ends of our political spectrum are doing all they can to rip this country apart, there is still a very large center that manages to hold it together. It's just not as loud or emotional or pugilistic.

Could there be sporadic violence at some point? Yeah, could be. But there's just as good a chance that those on the ends of the spectrum will go so far overboard that they'll marginalize themselves and reason will take over again.

It's a bad time. But we'll get past it. And them.

And you leave out that most of the country doesn't even vote and is not politically active one way or the other.

Most just want to go to work in the morning and enjoy their family in the evening. Anything that gets in the way is a non-starter.

When the democrat party used lies, fabricated false evidence, paid to have false evidence produced, and with the media underhanded tactics to overthrow an elected president, not just once or twice but again and again we are already in a civil war. We have been for over 3 years. It's just the shooting has just started. The democrats have tried to make it about race as they need to get anyone and every one they can to fight for their Socialist agenda.

It's not republicans trying to disarm America. Too bad that between 100 to 300 million people were killed by their government these last 110 years can't speak up. They would all say it started with gun control. Do you really think this pack of criminals that kill over 2,500 babies a day give a rat's ass about you being killed with a gun used in less than 1% of the crime. How do these democRats get so brain dead stupid? I don't even think they know. IT'S NOT JUST MY RIGHT BUT THEIR'S TOO.

However, our two political parties have made sure to both dumb down the population and turn them against each other to avoid everyone gathering up as one going to DC and chopping some fucking heads off.

No. The leftist antifa types may fantasize about it, like we’re seeing in CHAZ. But they are so coddled, so privileged, and so shielded from the dark depths of humanity, that they will scatter and run away faster than duckshot when they see what real violence looks like. Capitalism in America has thoroughly defeated any chance of another violent civil war by making everyone so extremely comfortable and safe. This is why our soldiers are having such a problem with PTSD. That’s not to say they aren’t brave, or they’re weak, but they’ve grown up in such an age where the maslow hierarchy is almost completely taken care of. When they do go into these 3rd world countries and are forced to see how dark these people are, the things they have to do to fight that darkness, it has a profound effect on them despite the months upon months of grueling training they go through. Now, compare our troops to the rich Berkeley kids coming from the suburbs, none of which have seen a flesh wound, or experienced more than a broken bone they got from skateboarding. They are nothing like the starving, hardened masses that took over Russia in the revolution, or Maoist China.

The only “war” left is an ideological one.

One of my friends in the mid-West, when I asked her these self-same questions told me that right wing radio has been pumping out Republican progaganda and dissinformation since Reagan was President, and coupled with their preachers telling them Democrats are communists for 40 years, middle Americans are convinced that Democrats are a greater threat to the nation than Russia.

It's insane.

Look for a book on McCarthyism from the 1950's - the communist witch hunts. Roy Cohn was McCarthy's advisor and confident. Roy Cohn was Donald Trump's mentor. I'd start there.

You actually had a good point there, and then you went and blamed Democrats for the problem. The Republican Party is inept in fiscal management, and social engineering, but they can run a master class in political propaganda and disinformation. Nobody smears, like a Republican smears, and they will pay millions to do so.

Robert Mercer paid for two books smearing the Clintons, including "Clinton Cash", a book whose allegations regarding the Clinton Foundation, Uranium One, and other purported Clinton financial scandals have yielded at least a dozen investigations, but produced no charges. Peter Schweizer, the Breitbart editor who Mercer paid to write this hit piece told interviewers that he had no evidence whatsoever of any of the allegations in his book, he just "connected" the dots.

All Clinton investigations start with Republican rumours and lies. The Ken Starr investigation started around rumours that the Clintons were involved in funny doings in Whitewater, a land deal in Arkansas they were involved in. Starr was never able to find any evidence of wrong doing against the Clintons, although both of their business partners were jailed. The investigation should have ended there, but Republicans kept making up stuff about the Clintons for Starr to investigate. Travelgate - a phony scandal over changing the White House travel agency, alleged, mis-use of FBI files, Vince Foster's death, Paula Jones, and Monica Lewinsky. The investigation dragged on for 6 1/2 years, and all they found was a lie about a blow job.

Newt Gingerich paid for a hit job on Mitt Romney that was devastating. Nobody does phony hit jobs like Republicans. Republicans lie to the public, smear the opposition, and frighten the voters into thinking Democrats are commies, because Republicans have nothing to run on. Their record is 40 years of fiscal mismanagement resulting in the 3 worst financial crashes since the Great Depression, each crash worst than the last.



40 years of Republican financial policies have left Americans sick broke and unemployed. That's not a record you can run on successfully, unless you lie successully.

There is no fundamental difference between a Democrat and an outright Communist - Bernie Sanders. Still, no chance of a civil war. According to the Declaration of Independence:
