In Maine, the labs are out of reagent (whatever that is) that is necessary for completing the test. They managed to find four vials, that will allow them to do a few hundred more tests. A few hundred. I think it is time for federal help here. We can ask other states for it, but they need it too. The USA is on a trajectory to be much closer to the worst case scenario than the best. You're still discussing getting testing kits out, and Trump's response seems to be to prepare for a pandemic that's a year away, not the one that's here today.

The rest of the first world is using existing social programs and government data bases for taxes and social spending to get money out to the workers displaced and without income. The US is arguing about who should get the money: the corporations or the workers. I expect it will go to the corporations, sadly. In Canada, it's being given directly to low income Canadians who already receive income supports. You could do the same.

Our local health units have the testing kits, and people are being encouraged to self-isolate. In the past 10 days, I've have contact with three people: the clerk in the grocery store, the neighbour who drove me to the grocery store and home, and my daughter, who dropped off groceries to me Friday. At age 70, with asthma and a heart condition, I'm enjoying spending time at home doing my taxes, spring cleaning, and getting the flower beds ready for spring. But I'm retired, and those pension cheques will hit my bank account this week without fail. I'm sure glad I don't live in any sort of senior housing unit at the moment. And I'm glad I don't live in the city or rely on public transit, at the moment.

Most importantly, if I were to get sick, I have no copays or additional payments for testing or treatment. I can just call the Ministry 1-800 number for corona virus screening. A tester will come to my home for the swabs. Our local grocery stores are reasonably well stocked, and all have early morning seniors only shopping hours.

My Prime Minister is focused on getting us through this, not whether this will hurt his re-election chances, or the stock market.

Realistic case: Thousands of Americans will be dead in the next few months but the disease will have been contained through effective social distancing and protocol.

Best case: The disease mutates and dies out on its own sooner rather than later which obviously can’t be predicted. It’s just possible it could happen.

These are scary times. We need to face the reality of how fucked things are going to get.

But after that, he assumed that was all that was needed and assured Americans the worst was over and everything was under control.

He missed an opportunity to ramp up preparedness and start stocking up on vital medical supplies.

As of now, we need him to show leadership. Start making tough decisions.
Trump has left the hard decisions to local authorities. If you need medical supplies, you are on your own. Let the states fight among themselves for who gets what.
