Eric Hoffer is known as "the "longshoreman philosopher." He never went to college. He never graduated from high school. Nevertheless, early in his life he developed a love for reading. His most famous book is The True Believer. In it he writes about the motives of political and religious fanatics.

He claims that people frequently develop a strong belief in a political or religious cause because they lack confidence in themselves. Often they fail to achieve their goals in life. Hitler failed to become an architect and a painter. Joseph Goebbels failed to become a novelist and a playwright.

Vladimir Lenin could have become a successful lawyer. Nevertheless, many Russians joined his Bolshevik Party because they discovered that their college degrees did not lead to careers in the stagnant economy of pre World War I Russia unless they had rich, and preferably aristocratic, parents.

I have read the book several times. I first read it when I was in the anti war movement during the War in Vietnam. I knew several people who joined the Socialist Workers' Party when they failed to get into law school, or when they flunk out of medical school.

A friend I had in high school became a right wing fanatic when he failed to become a high school teacher and a karate instructor.

Another friend became a Marxist revolutionary when he failed to become a professional football player. Fortunately, he was intelligent enough that he eventually achieved success in other areas where success is more durable than in professional athletics. .

As a moderate Democrat and an Episcopalian I doubt I can be called a political fanatic of any kind.

During the War in Vietnam I considered myself to be a democratic socialist. Currently, I do not believe in socialism, but I do not dislike it. I accept capitalism, but I do not like it.

At any rate, my involvement with the anti war movement burned me out on political movements. I think the behavior of many anti war activists angered many Americans into voting for hawks, who prolonged the war. I vote Democrat, but I do not contribute to the Democrat Party.

If I am fanatic about anything, it is about facts that can be documented. Too many people allow their likes and dislikes to determine their judgement of what is true and false.

The freedom that is most important to me is intellectual freedom.

There have been ups and downs in my life. Because I am not enterprising I have been overly dependent on good luck and overly vulnerable to bad luck.

I do not blame Negroes for downturns in my career. I do hold them responsible for the crimes committed against me. Whites, Orientals, and Hispanics have never committed crimes against me. This makes it easy for me to believe the fact that the Negro race has a much higher crime rate than any other race or demographic.

Prior to being robbed at gunpoint by two black teenagers I was aware of the high black crime rate, but I did not feel it emotionally.
