I already posted a thread about how we should go about calculating monetary reparations. Now I'd like to take about alternatives. With the economy in a bubble right now, it could come crashing down. All talks about getting reparations money will be over at that point. That's why diversifying ways to get reparations is important.

One type of reparation could involve no money and would just be something simple like an apology. We've already seen this in the form of people pledging their solidarity. History classes for decades have also taught students about slavery. For all the African Americans out there, how does a 5 page apologetic essay sound instead of a paycheck?

There's also indirect reparations. Google highlighting black-owned businesses is an example. This allows people to frequent black owned businesses more often and therefore contribute to their success. For all the big reparations supporters on this forum, do you use such a feature to find black-owned businesses? You might need to do your homework if you're in the dark on this.

I personally think this feature from Google could be expanded into a multi-platform system in which you get 'reparation points' for buying stuff from black-owned business. People could then share how many reparations points they have on social media.

You don't really have a say in this. Non monetary/indirect reparations are not going to happen.

It's time to stop pretending that no one else has ever asked for or received reparations. We will decide the manner in whch reparations will occur, not whites. Professor Willian Darity, a decorated economist, has determined how reparations will be administered and how much. So that's that.

These are just some of the reparations that have occurred during your lifetime.

1970: Richard Nixon signed into law House Resolution 471 restoring Blue Lake and surrounding area to the Taos Pueblo (New Mexico). The land had been taken by presidential order in 1906. (A History of the Indians in the United States by Angie Debo (Norman, OK: University of Oklahoma Press, 1984, p. 422); see also "Taos Pueblo celebrates 40th anniversary of Blue Lake's return" by Matthew van Buren, Santa Fe New Mexican, September 18, 2010.)

The payments from 1971-1988 are taken from the booklet Black Reparations Now! 40 Acres, $50 Dollars, and a Mule, + Interest by Dorothy Benton-Lewis; and borrowed from N’COBRA (National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America).

1971: Around $1 billion + 44 million acres of land: Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.

1974: A $10 million out-of-court settlement was reached between the U.S. government and Tuskegee victims, black men who had been unwitting subjects of a study of untreated syphilis, and who did not receive available treatments. (“The Tuskegee Timeline”, CDC, updated March 2, 2020.)

1980: $81 million: Klamaths of Oregon. ("Spending Spree" by Dylan Darling, Herald and News (Klamath Falls, OR), June 21, 2005.)

1980: $105 million: Sioux of South Dakota for seizure of their land. (United States v. Sioux Nation of Indians, 448 U.S. 371 (1980).)

1985: $12.3 million: Seminoles of Florida. (see Racial Justice in America: A Reference Handbook by David B. Mustard, 2002, ABC-CLIO, p. 81.)

1985: $31 million: Chippewas of Wisconsin. (see Racial Justice in America: A Reference Handbook by David B. Mustard, 2002, ABC-CLIO, p. 81.)

1986: $32 million per 1836 Treaty: Ottawas of Michigan. (see Racial Justice in America: A Reference Handbook by David B. Mustard, 2002, ABC-CLIO, p. 81.)

2016: The U.S. government reached a settlement of $492 million with 17 Native American tribes to resolve lawsuits alleging the federal government mismanaged tribal land, resources, and money. (“U.S. Government To Pay $492 Million To 17 American Indian Tribes” by Rebecca Hersher, NPR, September 27, 2016.)

2018: The Supreme Court, in a 4-4 deadlock, let stand a lower court's order to the state of Washington to make billions of dollars worth of repairs to roads, where the state had built culverts below road channels and structures in a way that prevented salmon from swimming through and reaching their spawning grounds, that had damaged the state’s salmon habitats and contributed to population loss. The case involved the Stevens Treaties, a series of agreements in 1854-55, in which tribes in Washington State gave up millions of acres of land in exchange for "the right to take fish." Implicit in the treaties, courts would later rule, was a guarantee that there would be enough fish for the tribes to harvest. Destroying the habitat reduces the population and thus violates these treaties. This decision directly affects the Swinomish Tribe. You have no link, and you idea is bs. Reparations won't crash the economy fool. It would provide a stimulus. When the reparations checks are cut, where is the money going to be spent? In America between backs and whites. Reparations will effectively remove every black recipient off government assistance. It will provide the venture capital for business start ups, growth and investment. This is not 1924 idiot, blacks know what to do with money. So we really don't need your ideas.

LOL! Why didn't you just put the figure in your reply? That nutjob professor wants $14 trillion ($300K per black person) in reparations. That's half the GDP! You aren't the dictator of reparations. In what batshiet crazy world do you think you'll ever have the power to compel Americans to pay such a ludicrous figure? Are you showing up with Wakanda tech?

Actually, blacks aren't as financially literate as you think. The hard evidence:

And where's your money? Why are you so desperate for reparations? Perhaps you don't have enough saved up for retirement?

Exactly! He says, with defiance, that blacks will decide what reparations will be! In what world do 13% of the population get to tell the majority what they will do?

WE will decide, via our elected representatives in Congress. And since they know that the majority of people are opposed, they’ll vote it down.

Why don't you just shut up? OK?. The reality here is that you nor any other white person can determine this. Darity is one of the best economists in the world, so you go argue with him.

BLACK REPARATIONS FOR TWENTIETH CENTURY FEDERAL
HOUSING DISCRIMINATION:
THE CONSTRUCTION OF WHITE WEALTH AND THE EFFECTS OF
DENIED BLACK HOMEOWNERSHIP

This paper examines the U.S. government’s instigation, participation, authorization, and perpetuation of federal housing discrimination against black Americans from the 1930s to the 1980s and the damage that such discrimination caused and continues to cause today. Delving into the U.S. government’s twentieth century federal housing practices, this paper discusses how the government effectively barred black-Americans from obtaining quality housing and from investing in housing as wealth, while simultaneously subsidizing and endorsing white homeownership, white suburbs, and white wealth.

Part I examines the U.S. government’s housing practices—from the New Deal until the 1968 Fair Housing Act and its 1988 Amendments—to reveal that although the New Deal’s national housing programs revolutionized homeownership and home equity in the United States, the U.S. government’s federal housing programs were racially discriminatory. Specifically, and quite shockingly, the U.S. government actively created and promulgated racist neighborhood rating systems that constructed black neighborhoods and black property as unstable, volatile, hazardous, and not worthy of investment. Using these racist rating systems, the federal government endorsed racial covenants and invested federal money into the creation and accumulation of white wealth, the value of whiteness, white suburbia, and white homeownership. Meanwhile, the government denied blacks federal housing funding, fueling black stigma and barring black-Americans from the invaluable twentieth century opportunities of homeownership and home equity.

Understanding the U.S. government’s discriminatory housing practices, Part II discusses and quantifies the effects of the government’s housing discrimination on black-American households and communities. Finding that approximately 120 billion 1950s dollars--or more than 1.239 quintillion 2019 dollars—were invested to subsidize and create white-American wealth through homeownership...

If whites can get the equivalent of 1 quintillion dollars spent on them by the government, the 14 trillion Darity suggests is nothiing. So you just need to be quiet and recognize that is the debt owed. As to terms of payment, you have no say. Your opinion is worth nothing, and the ideas you present are not worth anything either. We know what we need, and we can best determine how they money will be administered and for what legnth of time the payments will take place. Concern yourself with the problems in the white community that are so intense that 4-5 times more whites kill themselves every year than the black on black murders you guys spend your lives running your mouths about.

And one last thing. Whites have created a flying man made out of steel who came from Krypton, a woman who came from an invisble island, a man who lives underwater, a man who has rhe ability of a spider and several others, so don't say ---- about Wakanda.

Holocaust survivors got $290 a month, which is $750 in current dollars. Since people like IM2, who never had their spouse and children and siblings ripped from them and murdered, didn’t suffer the pain during and lifelong consequences after of near-starvation, didn’t have their livelihood destroyed and their home stolen, I would say that Holocaust survivors suffered 100x more than IM2, and I‘m being generous.

Thus, $7.50 a month seems equitable, or $90 a year. To simplify this payment, anyone who checks “black” on their tax return - and was born before 1964 - can deduct $90 from their taxes. Blacks who do not even pay federal taxes are already enjoying benefits supplied primarily by whites, and don’t get anything.

The problem here is that you're inherently bad at math. Quintillion = a million trillions. The wealth of the entire world amounts to around $500 trillion. And you're suggesting that the government has given about 2,500X that to white people??? Maybe he's the #1 economist from your neighborhood and there happens to be only one economist?

You didn't get the Wakanda reference. You said that you're going to get reparations forcibly. You're going to need some space-age, super advanced technology and weaponry for that to happen. Because people aren't going to lay down and let you rob them. If you want your $300K, come show up to my house and try to steal half of it. See what happens.

You can already use Google Maps to find black-owned businesses in your area. Why aren't you using this feature??? Surely you would rather give your money to blacks than whites. This is the indirect reparations that I was speaking about.

This is how Jews helped one another when they arrived around 1900, poor and uneducated. They shopped at one another’s businesses, especially since most of the country weren’t all that happy that Jews came here (legally).

That’s how you provide support within your own community. Not make demands from innocent people.

Thomas Sowell DESTROYS Reparations

and historians and most people who graduated high school in my generation KNOW

The historians John Thornton and Linda Heywood of Boston University estimate that 90 percent of those shipped to the New World were enslaved by Africans and then sold to European traders. The sad truth is that without complex business partnerships between African elites and European traders and commercial agents, the slave trade to the New World would have been impossible, at least on the scale it occurred.

I already posted a thread about how we should go about calculating monetary reparations. Now I'd like to take about alternatives. With the economy in a bubble right now, it could come crashing down. C'mon, this kind of thinking sheltered SLAVERY !!!

POINT 1 'Highlighting Black-owned businesses' --this will be the first fight, the definition of Black-owned and if ever settled non-Blacks will buy the defining ownership (or whatever the defintion is legally) and get govt support for free

POINT 2 If carbon credits are any indication

Worst of all, this exacerbates the racial distinctions that are the cause of all this conflict.
Inter-racial marriages are way up. and many indications are that is a person from a sound family with a decent education shows up, they will have as good a life as anybody.

RIght now abortion and the destruction of the family are the KILLERS in the Black Community

AND

Nearly a hundred years of the supposed “legacy of slavery” found most black children [78%] being raised in two-parent families in 1960. But thirty years after the liberal welfare state found the great majority of black children being raised by a single parent [66%].

Well you got tell that to Jane Kim who did the research. No, I did not say we will get reoarations forcibly. It wil be a case againstthe government just ike every other case of reparations have been. Your white ass isn't goingto be paying the money. You and others ike yu need to quit listeningto white race husters who have yur stupid ass beieving that no one else has ever asked for reparations or that reparations have not ever been given generations after the harm was done. We will set the terms of reparations, not whites.

Reparations are coming and there is nothing you can do to stop it.

In 2020, there were 5.9 million employer businesses in America, 134,567, or 2 percent, were owned by blacks. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency, there are just over 3.1 million non-employer Black-owned businesses in the United States. Blacks/African Americans, who, as is so astutely stated in reference to crime, make up 13% of the U.S. population, own less than 10 percent of all the businesses in the country, and generate less than one-half of 1 percent of the total business receipts. There are 3,671 public companies in the United States, and blacks own eight. That number equals less than ¼ of 1 percent of all publicly traded companies in America.

Business should be reciprocal. Whites need to spend money in black owned businesses. Stop trying to assume things son, because you're not very good at it. There will be no indirect reparations. No one else harmed by the goverment has settled for "indirect" reparations. Your idea is idiotic and based on your own racist hatred as well as a lack of knowledge about the history of reparations in this country. Study that, then come talk.

Other than a couple of mom-and-pop specialty stores, I have no idea who owns the shops and restaurants I spend my money in. It simply doesn't matter. I spend my money where I get good service and a good product at reasonable prices. If you want to bring racism into where you spend your money, that's your business. But it wouldn't surprise me that you would refuse to patronize a white owned business even if you had to pay triple the prove for a totally inferior product because of your prejudices.

Thank you for providing those statistics to validate my point about increasing the public visibility of Black-owned businesses. Excuse me, you didn't answer the question if you use any resources to find Black-owned businesses to spend your money. Would you rather have Blacks get handouts or earn the money through their businesses? And Native Americans biggest benefit has been indirect reparations. For example, only Indian reservations can have casinos in California. It doesn't directly shove money into their hands, but gives them an avenue to earn a steady income.

Giving Black people handouts hasn't worked so far. Reparations will be the worst thing to ever happen to them when the money runs out.

I won't be paying any money? Who do you think pays to keep the government running? Do you really believe money grows on trees? Perhaps the government will tax the ghosts of Confederate soldiers and slave owners?

So you're saying you won't get the money forcibly, but then you say "Reparations are coming and there is nothing you can do to stop it". You've also said that you'd die fighting for reparations in another post of yours. Damn brother, I think you need a break from this whole reparations topic.

Other than a couple of mom-and-pop specialty stores, I have no idea who owns the shops and restaurants I spend my money in. It simply doesn't matter. I spend my money where I get good service and a good product at reasonable prices. If you want to bring racism into where you spend your money, that's your business. But it wouldn't surprise me that you would refuse to patronize a white owned business even if you had to pay triple the price for a totally inferior product because of your prejudices.

I am quite sure no one living in 1980 was alive when the U.S. government made the Fort Laramie treaty with the Sioux Nation or were participants in Custers violation of that treaty. Nor were they alive when President Grant decided it was OK to let settlers and people prospecting for gold trespass into land promised to the Sioux thereby violating the treaty. No one in 1980 was alive when the U.S. government decided to take the land from the Sioux by military force. No one in 1980 was alive when the U.S. government decided to cut off supplies they promised the Sioux as condition for their surrender after whipping the U.S. Army at The Battle of Little Bighorn. But in 1980, the government of the United States decided reparations were due to the Sioux Nation for what was done to them in the 1800’s. They awarded the Sioux nation 105 million dollars.

This is just one example. Nobody talked about indirect repartions and told the Native Americans to spen moere money in Native American businsses. Whitws llike the OP want to take the easy way out. But thats just nothow its going tobe. You've had the easy way now for 248 years. The govrrnment owes for atrocuties that have occurred in every generation and that means this one too. When the slaves were freed, there was a document called Circular 15 that granted land to the freed slaves. But whites back then thought the same way as you guys do now, they came up with a bunch of bs excuses as to why giving land to blacks coudn't be done and that order got rescinded.

Meanwhile whites were being given free land.

So you see, at the bare minimum, reparations is about making the government keep a promise documented on paper that it broke.. Learn the real history of this country before you again think that just because you are white that you getto tell somebody about the terms on which reparations should be done.
