Homeschooling: Your Views, Please

I fear the day when we can no longer homeschool our children because our children would be forcefully taken away. Germany does this.

Almost all European countries do

If you think that Japanese kids don't fornicate and get into trouble with the law, you're nuts.

I don't think I said that...

There does seem to be more modesty and focus on academia in Japanese schools with uniforms, than American public schools. Less peer pressure, too, because students aren't fighting to look better or more sexual than other students. That's more or less the point I was trying to make.

The point I was trying to make is that you are mistaken in that belief. Teenagers are teenagers, wherever you go.

True. Teenagers are dumb yet smart enough to find ways to get away with things. The nature of teenagers notwithstanding, do you think it'd be alright to have students wear uniforms for modesty? I believe it helps, and am currently supporting this idea.

...the ones obama wants us to be like...

This is a shame. And scary, too. You're not even allowed to school your own children as you see fit. No, the government decides which ideas fill these young minds.

How many children has Obama forcefully taken out of home-schooling? Is it zero or less than that?

This is why stupid people shouldn't be allowed to teach children.

I don't believe anyone's said he has, KNB. Please don't be so quick to call people stupid.

He may be trying to move the nation towards that gradually, though. I'm not sure what his latest moves on that front have been so far. Was surprised when he allowed that German family to come here with their children to continue homeschooling.

Yeah, he's moving us in that direction, isn't he? There's proof of that all over the place. Kids being taken from their home by Blackwater mercenaries, put into socialist FEMA re-education camps, and they have their guns taken away.......

It's happening but the liberal media won't report on it, right? Because Obama owns the liberal media, right?

Is that the kind of bullshit that you want to teach to your children?

Rich people are richer now than ever before, so explain Socialism to me as you would explain it to your child in home-school. Does it involve rich people getting richer? Because that's Capitalism, not Socialism. If you don't know what Socialism is then how do you expect to be able to teach your children?

A lot of stupid people will home school their children into being stupid too.
In America, you have the right to be stupid.

We have already established that you shouldn't be allowed to teach children. Don't belabor the point.

I'm all for home schooling. It's an option that works very well for some folks. My wife and I home schooled our daughter for a few years due to medical issues my daughter was having. She is now in public high school and doing extremely well. We used an online school with teachers there to check the work. The curriculum was accredited by the state, and she had to take state tests periodically.

We think the 3 years we spent home schooling our daughter were of great help to her academically. Instead of being in a class half full of ESL kids slowing everything down to a crawl, she was able to learn at a much faster pace with more challenging material.

I was homeschooled as a child.

There are arguments made for and against it.

Would you please share your views on it here?

My nieces and nephews has been homeschooling for
seven years now and is using curriculum from AOP
every year. It is so nice to know that AOP is
there with so many great products to make mom's
life easier. This is their website: HomeschoolingOption Your one stop shop for Homeschooling options

Anne

Does the AOP do the instruction with the kids?

If intelligent parents do it right, homeschooling might be better. Some schools are crap. Others are okay, but depends on where you live.

Some teachers are dealing with a class where different languages are spoken. Huge hindrance to learning.

Depends on the curriculum....I had my youngest in Zion Academy but it had too much religious over tones and less on schooling that would help him in the long run...

Which is an excellent argument for making English the official language of the land--the language everybody is expected to learn and know to participate in government, business, and academia. There was a time in America when new immigrants were expected to learn sufficient English to pass their immigration exam and take their oath of allegiance to the USA in English in order to become U.S. citizens. They were expected to learn English on their own dime and that included English instruction for their children who were expected to be proficient enough in the language to be able to do competent schoolwork in English.

This was extremely compassionate for the immigrants and their children as it prepared them to fully assimilate and succeed in the U.S. culture. And the new immigrants were eager to do it and grateful for the opportunity to become citizens on that basis. I know because I once headed an agency that provided affordable classes in both English as a second language and citizenship and taught some of those classes myself. And I proudly attended many a swearing in ceremony watching those wonderful people become U.S. citizens--there wouldn't be a dry eye in the house.

So not only have public schools become indoctrination centers as much as centers of learning, but we expect teachers to accommodate multi-lingual, multi-cultural classes, hoodlums and numbnuts that absolutely can erode the quality of education for the average U.S. student.

If I had school age kids these days, and could not afford a quality private school, I would homeschool.

You have to be responsible for your education and the education of your own family members.

What do you mean by "there was a time"? Has that changed?

Doesn't look like it here...

The Naturalization Test
To become a naturalized U.S. citizen, you must pass the naturalization test. At your naturalization interview, you will be required to answer questions about your application and background. You will also take an English and civics test unless you qualify for an exemption or waiver.

Family I personally know has more than five children, some of whom suffer from a genetic brain defect that makes learning difficult. They're not low-IQ; they have to learn things through ways that aren't "mainstream". Confronted with the choice of seeing them shunted off into "Special Ed" to vegetate the parents undertook home schooling, augmenting with participation in public school stuff like science fairs and sports.

One with the defect now has a MS in computer related stuff and is working on a doctorate.

One without the defect is now in a doctorate program that will lead to medical research.

One with the defect is 2nd year college in a work/study construction program that will culminate in a business degree.

One with the defect is within a year of graduation in a university level wildlife management program.

One more completed a BA degree and, God forgive her, is working in social engineering.

Others are either starting university studies or within a year of finishing high school. Three have excelled in sports like track and one may have Olympics potential.

But they would have been better off in Special Ed, right?

I am guessing that what has changed, in addition to our laws being completely ignored, is that there are far more waivers and people exempt from having to follow them.
