If you want to have the discussion about whether we should reduce our presense overseas or not get involved in Israel's problems, that's fine. Neither party is willing to have that discussion.
Fact is, we spend nearly a trillion on education on the Federal, State and Local level- far more than we do on the miltiary, and that doesn't include private expendatures.
We spend 274 billion a year on transportation projects at the state and local level alone. 320 billion on police and fire protection.

Government spending makes up about 6 Trillion in a 14 trillion dollar economy... So please do not get here and try to tell me that.
1) The GOvernment isn't spending enough money on X
or
2) That spending another 447 billion on top of that is going to improve much of anything.
This is tiresome too.
Entitlement spending on vets isn't scored as military spending. That is scored as entitlement spending. Take that away and lump it on military spending would be a huge deduction to the entitlement spending and a huge addition to military spending.
The military industrial complex in this country is vast. We are in some pile of shit war nearly every year.
And you're right..neither party seriously discusses this.

What Americans heard last night was a $447 billion political plan, not an economic one. Its purpose was to a) fire up the demoralized Democratic base and b) show independents that Obama is trying to do something anything to reduce unemployment, not just slash needed investment like those heartless, pro-austerity Republicans.
In a recent paper, Stanford University economist John Taylor simply looked at whether, as a result of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, consumers actually consumed and whether government actually spent in a way that produced real growth and jobs. Turns out, they didnt:
Individuals and families largely saved the transfers and tax rebates. The federal government increased purchases, but by only an immaterial amount. State and local governments used the stimulus grants to reduce their net borrowing (largely by acquiring more financial assets) rather than to increase expenditures, and they shifted expenditures away from purchases toward transfers. Some argue that the economy would have been worse off without these stimulus packages, but the results do not support that view.
Just dont expect it to do much for Americas sputtering economic recovery.

Compared to Bill Clinton, who could snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, could turn his enemies words against them, who could turn his own sleazy personal behavior into something that made him look symathetic, Obama's skills are actually rather poor.

Actually, I live in IL, so no matter how bad things get for Obama, he'll probably carry this state, for no other reason than Rahm will get out the Chicago Graveyard Vote.

I'm discussing in the larger theme. Forget why Republicans hate Obama. They hated Clinton, too.
But Obama will be remembered as the guy who brought the GOP back from the dead AND pushed it further to the right. And in the likely event he is thrown out of office, the GOP will have maybe a decade of continued influence.
