Comparing the grocery store to a commissary or a PX is an apples and oranges comparisonDo you think that PXs and Commissaries make money?
I can tell you they do not. After I retired from the Marines I spent a bit under 2 years as the Produce Manager for a Commissary. Went there after I left WalMart and before I started my current job.
The first month I did our monthly inventory with the store manager and at the end of it I was told "you made too much money", words I had never heard while working at WalMart that is for sure. I was not allowed to have more than 5 percent plus or minus at the end of the month. I was told we were not there to make money but to provide a service to the member of the Military that shopped there. And this was just on the cost of the produce, this did not include any labor which was not factored into the equation at all.
I actually think government run grocery stores is a great idea.Who would have ever thought that government run grocery stores would be horrible and lose money? Yet another example of the left's embrace of socialism. Let's go Chicago! Set that goal of only losing 100K per year. It's good to set goals.
"Erie Market, which the city took over in 2021, is losing money almost every month amid stiff competition from a Walmart 15 miles away and a Dollar General across the street," reports the Journal's Joe Barrett. Erie Market posted just a single profitable month during 2022 and lost $132,000.
Maybe Erie's erstwhile government grocers didn't realize that—unlike with other government services—grocery stores are subject to competition. Bummer.
But city officials "aren't giving up," they tell the Journal. Meanwhile, the store's manager says the "goal" is to lose only $100,000 this year.
Government-Run Grocery Store Is Predictably Losing Money
The folly of government-run grocery stores is sadly not a historical relic like the USSR.www.yahoo.com

Yeah, those in Russia and other socialist countries just love them. Maybe you didn't read the link where these stores are losing over 100K per year. That's taxpayer money, especially at the local level where it can't be charged to Uncle Sam's charge card.I actually think government run grocery stores is a great idea.
LOL. Yes, they are non profit alright! The Government saves money by buying in huge quantities and being non profit
The dumb ones are the voters who threw Lightfoot out on her ass and then voted for someone further left than she was. The dumb fucks never learn. They'll probably throw him out on his ass and vote for someone left of him.I didn't think our new mayor could be as dumb as Lightfoot, surprise, much dumber.
And they do exceedingly well at that. That's why we are in debt 33 trillion dollars.Government is not a for-profit business.
I doubt that will stop the smash and grabbers. The old timey grocery stores kept their products behind the counter.
They might have to start doing that again.

Why did you bring that up? Are you saying that Commissaries and PXs make money? If so, why doesn't this store make money and sell at cheaper prices? If not, why mention them? The Government has been running Commisaries and PXs at military bases around the world
They have prices cheaper than the surrounding communities
LOL. Oh, you were actually serious.I actually think government run grocery stores is a great idea.
And there's the problem with government run anything. There is no incentive to actually do things the most efficient way possible, because you can just print or borrow more money if you need it.And they do exceedingly well at that. That's why we are in debt 33 trillion dollars.
For what reason? And please give us something more than just feelz.I actually think government run grocery stores is a great idea.
We are eventually heading to a Great Depression that will make 1930 look like a booming economy. I don't know whether we are inches away from that now or still a few months or years away. But, forget about global warming destroying the planet, if we and the world do not get our financial acts together, we will be in for a world of hurt. And there's the problem with government run anything. There is no incentive to actually do things the most efficient way possible, because you can just print or borrow more money if you need it.
How much do commissaries buy and sell at cost and it is cheaper but it seems Chicago can’t even do that, then they are losing to Walmart and Dollar Tree on top of everything else. Funny how Walmart and Dollar Tree generate millions in profits but this government run store hasa goal of losing money. The Government has been running Commisaries and PXs at military bases around the world

Which are ran to also not make a profit. Got a point there?Commissaries are Government run grocery stores

So why is this store not making money when it supposedly has these advantages?Yes
Government run grocery stores can provide low prices and not lose money.
Military Commissaries work because they can buy in large quantities
