Gerrymandering makes hypocrisy a political punch line

Hi struth. My name is citygator. This is a thread on gerrymandering and we are discussing a bill submitted by democrats that included a republican cosponsor that made gerrymandering illegal. You see, if passed it would have been a law so that the courts would have had something to review. Welcome to the conversation. Now that you are caught up I hope you meaningfully contribute.
I just read the OP again, no this is a thread about how Dems refused to do their job, and fled to the most gerrymandered state in the Union to avoid voting on a redistricting plan they oppose.

There is no right way to draw district boundaries.

Is there a wrong way? :icon_rolleyes:

You know, when you draw up crazy new districts because you can't win by simply getting more votes?

As it relates to gerrymandering...who was in power and where?

I really don't think you understand what you are saying.
Really! Who controlled congress from 2021 through 2023? That would be the QUACKS!

You go ahead and redistrict, lololol. Oh, forgot, you QUACKS already did virtually EVERYTHING you could do. Now, you are going to get hosed. If they just do it fairly by the American count, you are going to lose upwards of 10 seats, no matter how hard you try. If they get illegals kicked, you are looking at over 30!

Really, you phony-e-baloney! From 15 to 19? How about from 11 to 19!!!!!!!!! And no, it is NOT unauthorized, it ILLEGAL!

Migration Policy Institute, lololol. Conservatives; do you know who these clowns are and who/whom funds them, hahahahahahaha. Not gonna tell ya. You want to sink the SS Citygator, look it up, then come on back and tell him how full of sh** as a Thanksgiving turkey he is!!!!!!
Here is through 2022, the most recent data, which gives the same answer. 54% Red States, 46% Blue States. 2023 will come out in a few months.

No they can't and you SAY they can because you don't understand that there are laws governing possible congressional mapping. Just because you can grab a pen and circle red parts of the state doesn't mean you actually make a red congressional district out of it legally.

I gave you the link, why not simply read and try to understand it?

LOL. Yes, I realize democrats gerrymandered republicans down to zero representation and then passed laws against changing that.

Hi struth. My name is citygator. In this thread we discussed a bill from last year submitted by democrats. You see, typically in threads there are lines of debate the splinter off that are still related to the overall thread (gerrymandering) but include a discussion on an element of the OP. In this case the subject was the bill on ending gerrymandering which i submitted to counter the point that this is a democrat feature. They want to end it. I am really glad I was able to show you how threads work. Look forward to the discussion!

Sounds like an unConstitutional bill. Not surprised the Dems did that for show, knowing it was illegal and going nowhere.

The bill outlines the criteria for a redistricting plan, including that the plan shall not unduly favor or disfavor any political party.

What does that even mean? Unconstitutional right of the bat for being vague.

Its not unconstitutional. Just like voter id isnt unconstitutional. Just like laws banning giving stuff to voters in line are not unconstitutional. It just so happens that there is no federal law banning it so it is 100% legal. However, its not great for democracy and it is totally constitutional to pass this law. In fact many states already passed a version of it and the courts have no issues with it. Florida, for instance has a law outlawing it at the state level.

Someone always wins and someone always loses.
I actually like the concept of "elections have consequences" and the majority gets to re-district.
That is democracy.
You can consider things like communities, town and county boundaries, geography

Political affiliation should not be a consideration

How do you know it's not unConstitutional? Voter ID doesn't tell a state how to draw it's districts. Moreover, Voter ID has been done on the State level, same with laws banning stuff in line is usually done on the state level, and again, has nothing to do with telling a state how to draw up it's district.

The big issue with the law that was merely introduced and nothing else done in 2021, is that it's vague. Who determines what gerrymandering is?

I answered that already. States have passed laws and they are not unconstitutional.

I also answered the "who decides". There is criteria. I posted it. And ultimately, like every single law ever passed the courts decide if it is being followed or not. Spoiler warning: The Supreme Court gets the final say.

Just because a State can do something like requiring an ID, doesn't mean the Federal Govt can pass laws telling states how they can draw up their districts.

The SCOTUS already ruled that the political gerrymandering is a political question, and they won't touch it. https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/18pdf/18-422_9ol1.pdf

That is not how the democrats gerrymandered their states, it was all about minimizing GOP districts.
So that is how the game is played going forward.
Only maximizing political power is considered.

While the House may be iffy, Republicans will be adding more Senate seats...

Where is the GOP vulnerable?

MI and GA could be GOP pick-ups.

15th post
The democrats can't squeeze any more seats if they tried, they are gerrymandered to the max.

Republicans need to squeeze every seat they can out of every red or purple state.
WTF kinda Bizarro World is this...?!?!??

Democrats gerrymandered, Republicans need to do the same. Real Politik.

So when Texas Republicans are saying they are gerrymandering so Trump can have 5 more Republican seats in Congress thats...a provocation by Democrats?

You seriously think someone is going to buy that stupid rationalization?
