So if you believe in SOLA SCRIPTURA then do you believe the following verses:
Psalms 82:6
6 I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.
Jesus surely believed it and told us that it was He who gave that doctrine and used it when the Pharisees sought to condemn him for claiming to be the Son of God.
John 10:31-36
31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself
God.
34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
So do you now believe that we are gods? Do you believe that God would give us a commandment we could not fulfill? For example:
Matthew 5:48
48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Or would God command us to be something we could never be? Do you believe this verse which is also, like the verses above, SOLA SCRIPTURA.
John 17:20-23
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
Do you believe that we may become one with God, even as Father and Son are one? Do you believe that God loves us as he has loved Jesus? It is all in the Bible (ie SOLA SCRIPTURA)
You haven't proven anything. I have showed you in scripture that Jesus believes that we are all gods. Abraham, Jacob, and David all had multiple wives. Were they all condemned for this practice? If not please explain why? You seem to think that plural marriage has always been a sin, yet Abraham was wed to both Sarah and Keturah at the same time. Jacob was married to Leah, Rachel, and other concubines. David was married to many, many wives. There was a law in Israel that if a man died, his brother should take his wives unto him and raise up seed unto his brother. Were all these prophets condemned by God for having more than one wife? No! This Joseph Smith wondered about and received revelation of the Lord and was command to live under the law of plural marriage for a time to fulfill the restitution of all things spoken by the mouth of all the Holy Prophets since the world began.
Acts 3:20-21
20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
It was you who stated that all truth was received by those who lived during days of Jesus Christ and His Apostles. My point to you was that God is never changing in heaven but he does change some of the things he requires at the hands of his followers. Case in point as I have pointed out was that the Israelites were not given the who law of the gospel but received a lesser law because of their hard heartedness. Later Jesus fulfilled the law and thus not all things are or have been revealed unto man. All truth had been given them in the days of Christ and his Apostles but also many of the plain and precious truths of the gospel had been lost through apostasy after the apostles were murdered and church gradually fell into apostasy.
Jude 1:3
3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
All this verse tells us is that we should contend for the faith that will bring the grace of Jesus Christ upon us. That is the key to salvation but there is much more to it that telling someone to simply have faith.
2 Peter 1:3-10
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and
godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be
partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience
godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
Yes, the saints of former days did have the knowledge of what they needed to do to obtain salvation. However, they did not possess ALL TRUTH. One of the main things that was lost through apostasy was the priesthood of God which was given by those having authority and allowed those who received it to perform certain rites and ordinances of the priesthood such as baptism and the giving of the Holy Ghost. Without such, the ordinances performed by those professing to have the authority to baptize and give the gift of the Holy Ghost, but do not have it, are of no effect. Through the Prophet Joseph Smith, the priesthoods were restored, ie the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods. Because of apostasy, there are many varying sects in Christianity and they are not united under one faith. They do not all hold the priesthood and many do not understand the scriptures. What do you think it means to make your calling and election sure?
Eventually to all who follow after Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost, they have the opportunity to be able to become perfect even as their Father in Heaven is perfect. They are they who can become one with Jesus even as he is one with Father. They can become partakers of the divine nature and become gods in the sense that they become one with the Father and Jesus Christ. As I said before, All truth has not been revealed here on this earth. One will likely become one with God the Father and Jesus Christ after this life after proving that they have been faithful. It was you who said that the former day saints had all truth and it was within the SOLA SCRIPTRUA. However there are many truths which are not even related to our salvation that are not contained in scripture, so no, they didn't have all truth.
The Apostle Peter taught the people of Jerusalem that were Jews and others the following:
Acts 2:37-38
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Here we learn that baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost were to be given to all who repented for the remission of sins. These were not just apostles but were the lay people of Jerusalem. Baptism and the Gift of the Holy Ghost was to be given unto any who believed and repented of their sins. This is what Jesus meant when he taught that man must be born of water and of the spirit to even enter into the kingdom of heaven (John 3:5). All must receive baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost in order to enter the kingdom of God.
I just showed you above that the people of Jerusalem who would repent and be baptized would receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. The people of Samaria who received the word of God and were baptized were sent Peter and John who went there and conferred the gift of the Holy Ghost upon them also.
Acts 8:
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
So NO, you are wrong. The gift of the Holy Ghost was given to as many as would repent and be baptized. It is being born of the water and of the spirit in order to enter the kingdom of God. Because of the gradual apostasy that occurred shortly after the deaths of the Apostles, the priesthood to baptize and confer the gift of the Holy Ghost was lost. It was restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith after many years. A member of the Aaronic priesthood was able to baptize with water, but it took a member of the Melchizedek priesthood to confer the gift of the Holy Ghost.
You forgot those of Acts 8 who were in Samaria. Yes the gift of the Holy Ghost was given to many and not just Apostles. Any who were received into the church were given the gift. This was the being born of water and the SPIRIT so that all could eventually enter the kingdom of God.
All members of Christ's church were to receive both baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost. However, once the apostasy came and the priesthood was lost, only then did those without authority attempt to baptize and confer the gift unsuccessfully. Those who held Aaronic priesthood and Melchizedek priesthood were allowed to baptize and confer the Holy Ghost respectively. It was not only given to the Apostles. The history of the Apostles and their giving the Holy Ghost to others is attested in scripture but can you show me that this right was only given to Apostles in scripture or SOLO SCRIPTURA. Can you prove it was not given to others? True Simon tried to buy the gift but it was not to be had by money but only given to those who were found worthy to hold the priesthood of God.
