What does "belong to a religion" mean?

Even when I was a religious person, I would never have used that wording.

Seems creepy.

I would say “belong to a BETTER religion”. But that might hurt feelings.

how many can understand a Latin sermon?
I think it mainly caters to the clergy, all of whom speak Latin. They only hold one a week, IIRC, and the times that we have attended the pews are mainly filled with priests, nuns, and tourists, like us.

OK. Let's go at it that way. Moses law was given to the Jews to keep them separate from others. When did god remove that restriction?
Who did Moses receive the laws, doctrines and ordinances from? He received them from Jesus Christ who was formerly known as Jehovah, the spiritual son of the Father. It's the law Jesus gave Moses and therefore has the right to fulfill the laws making many of them obsolete going forward. He gave Israel (there are 12 tribes, not just Judah) a higher law with the higher priesthood (power of God to administer God's works and ordinances on the earth). Baptism by water and the spirit (holy ghost) replaced circumcision. The other busy body 600 laws were no longer necessary either.

Some clarity is needed as well. Jews are those members of Israel in the Tribe of Judah. JU-dah, JEW-dah. There are 11 other Tribes of Israel. Jesus Christ is part of Judah (Mary) and part (The Father). He has the authority to continue the law of tithing and fast offerings for the poor, the hungry and the needy.

It is a Jewish thing. Tithes are to be given to the Levites. When Israel was divided in the days of Jeroboam and Rehoboam the Levites remained with Judah. Tithing was done in Jesus' day and while the temple and the Aaronic priesthood remained. The Law ended with the destruction of the temple and the diaspora of the Jews. Recall that Jesus primary ministry was to the "lost sheep of the house of Israel", the ten tribes who went with Jeroboam and who retained the namesake "Israel". Jesus came to them 760 years after the Assyrian captivity. By then they had lost the Law, tithing included. Jesus didn't reestablish the law of tithing with them. Tithing is still not generally recognized among the churches that Jesus founded, although some encourage it as a principle.

The "I belong to" wording just gives me the same vibe as "they own me."

I don't know if any of them feel that way (like they are owned by their religion), but that smacks of the kind of guilt-tripping control that essentially drove me away.

Set theorem, where the symbol ∈ denotes membership in a set. As is A ∈ B

It doesn't denote hierarchy in that set, only membership.

I belong to the subset hominids, it does not indicate that I am "owned" by all other homonids. It only denotes we are members of the same set.

Understood.

However, we are talking about more than a class or species here, when we are talking about religions. . . and how that might include "cults" and cult like mindsets.

Many years ago, I was a field engineer for a large business machine company. My territory included much of Northern California

I spend hours on the road going from customer to customer and along large stretches of Hwy 5 there was no radio reception other than AM and the strongest stations were either Country Music of Xtian Radio. I don't like country music and the religious programming was much more entertaining.

One of the shows I enjoyed the most was where people would call in and describe their neighbors and the host would go on to tell them why their neighbor was in a cult and how best to bring him along to the "true faith". It turns out that among the 50,000 or so different xtian denominations, all but ONE are cults and I never did find out what that one was.

Giving is a matter of conscience and ability, not a matter of Law.

There were 1500 years between Moses and Jesus.
