Zone1 What Might Happen if Russia Puts Oreshniks in Cuba?

Russia can’t even defeat Ukraine.

They’re in no position to go to war with the USA

The Soviet Union wasn’t even in a position to go to war with the USA, and the Russia of today is no where near as powerful as the USSR was in its day
How do you rate the "power" of the US military/economy today with their strength 30 years ago?

The lasting economic scars of war.

"Wars leave deep and lasting scars on economies.

"Using data for 115 conflicts across 145 countries over the past 75 years, this column documents large and persistent declines in output, investment, and trade following the onset of war, with no evidence of recovery even a decade later.

"Government revenues collapse while spending remains stable, forcing reliance on inflationary finance and short-term debt.

"The findings show that the true cost of war extends far beyond the battlefield, reshaping fiscal and monetary stability for years to come."

What? Me worry?
You do a targeted missile strike on Xi, he dies, and then they receive a message that says that we wont fire nukes if China doesnt fire nukes. Then it becomes a conventional war.

They know that we have multiple Trident subs invisibly parked off their coast, and they also know that we will spot any of their loud diesel subs if they come to our coast.

Both sides have ICBM's, but we could utterly annihilate China before they launched all of their nukes. We would take some serious blows, but we would survive. China would be erased from the map and they would just become an interesting historical footnote in a thousand years. I cant imagine the leadership accepting that outcome. The end of their culture and people? Nah.

It seems highly unlikely that China would engage in nuclear war with us, even if we attacked their homeland.

Cool story Bro! What if they nuke first, and ask questions later? Sometimes things don't always go as planned. Like Iran, we'd have to attack them first.

Putin isn't going to do tha
If Putin put Oreshniks in Cuba it would certainly surprise millions of Americans just as Nikita Khrushchev bewildered millions of Americans in 1962.

How do you think today's US military compares to the 1962 or 1992 versions?

Why would they shoot first? They know that the moment the US sees ICBMs being launched, our super close subs will end their civilization. Do you believe that Chinese people are suicidal?

There won't be a war with China. All of the Trump family's merchandise is made there.

Let's ask Google:

"Placing Russian Oreshnik hypersonic missiles in Cuba would trigger a major, 1962-style geopolitical crisis, drastically elevating the risk of direct nuclear confrontation.

"With Mach 10 speeds and a ~5,000 km range, these missiles could strike the US mainland instantly, bypassing current defense systems, likely forcing a massive, escalatory US response."

If anyone cares to respond to this hypothetical, please consider revealing if you remember...

I never thought I would see the day:

Cuba, US confirm high-level negotiations after Trump predicts regime's fall

"In a rare move, Cuba's president has publicly acknowledged that his government was holding secretive talks with the U.S. as President Donald Trump intensifies his pressure campaign against the regime.

"'Cuban officials have recently held talks with representatives of the United States government,' President Miquel Díaz-Canel said during a televised address on Friday.

"'We want to avoid manipulation and speculation,' Díaz-Canel later added, explaining that the talks were still 'in their first phase' and that negotiators from both countries were working 'to establish an agenda.'

"President Donald Trump floats 'friendly takeover' of Cuba"

How did that work out last time?

"Botched Landings and Poor Timing

"Things continued to go wrong as the American-backed fighting force attempted its amphibious landing under the cover of darkness.

"When studying reconnaissance photographs, CIA analysts had failed to spot coral reefs in the shallow waters of the Bay of Pigs that impeded the progress of landing craft and disabled a pair of boats.

"In addition, one of the red signal lights carried by a frogman accidentally flickered offshore.

"When a pair of Cuban militiamen in a jeep spotted the light and pointed their headlights toward them, the frogmen opened fire with their rifles and machine guns, ruining the element of surprise."

It didn't because we never tried. That was a CIA joke.

It's at least ironic how JFK changed his Cuba policy after defeating Nixon in 1960:

Why the Bay of Pigs Invasion Went So Wrong | HISTORY

"During the 1960 presidential campaign, Kennedy had repeatedly called for American intervention in Cuba.

"'Incredibly, Kennedy got elected by outflanking Richard Nixon as an anti-communist hawk. He beat up the Eisenhower administration for allowing Castro to come to power and not doing anything about it.'

"'So he became president in large part because of his anti-communist rhetoric, and he didn’t want to look like a hypocrite or soft on communism.'"

No, he figured out the CIA was full of shit when he got the ability to see what they were doing.

Which is why they assassinated him.

I do not remember the Cuban Missile Crisis but I did read "Topaz" by Leon Uris in the late seventies.

I do believe that the tide of history is shifting in favour of the good guys winning many conflicts at the same time that the darkness is driven back further and further.

Topaz (1967) is a Cold War thriller novel by Leon Uris set during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. It centers on French and American intelligence agents uncovering Soviet plans to ship nuclear arms to Cuba. The story involves political intrigue, Soviet defectors, and a plot to save NATO, later adapted into a 1969 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock

Key details of Topaz and the Cuban Missile Crisis context:
  • Plot: French intelligence chief Andre Devereaux and NATO agent Michael Nordstrom work to expose the Soviet nuclear buildup in Cuba, leading to a race against time to prevent nuclear escalation.
  • Characters/Conflict: The novel focuses on high-level intelligence failures and political maneuvering, where intelligence on the missiles is initially ignored, leading to danger for the agents involved.
  • Context: While the 1962, thirteen-day crisis was a real, high-stakes standoff between the US and USSR, Uris used this backdrop to create a fictionalized, fast-paced spy story
