Trump may have already changed his mind after today's market carnage.

Long term cost, lesh. Do you think it's right that other countries don't buy as much of our products because their government wants to make sure our prices as not attractive? Not only does this hurt us by giving us less access to their markets, it hurts us here at home because American companies don't produce as much for our own consumers.

If we are always buying imported goods, American companies are not producing enough here at home for Americans to buy. This is the reason tariffs are a thing in the first place. So why is it ok when a foreign country uses them to help their own country, but it's bad when we want to use them to help ourselves?

If we hadnt started importing every thing, we wouldn't be in this situation.
Keep sucking Trump’s ass while he burns down our economy.

You don’t like the trade deficit? Don’t buy foreign made goods. You decry that not enough are made here? Start a manufacturing company

You want to negotiate better trade deals? Have at it.

But STOP ******* up the economy

Again… you assholes are burning down the house because you don’t like the color it’s painted

Why are you anti American business?

And because I want us to be able to trade fairly..that's sucking Trump's ass?

You don't see how it would be good for our economy if american manufactures were producing more?

You obsequious dishonest sycophants.

I’m not anti-business. In fact I don’t see business lining up in favor of this. Just the opposite. Know why? Because burning down the house doesn’t do much for business. Even Elmo Musk realizes how bad this is for business.

You want better trade deals! NEGOTIATE them.

Sure. Building up our manufacturing would be great. Do you think we’ll ever be manufacturing shoes and t shirts again? How much would they cost?

In fact Dems enacted the CHIPS act to bring back chip manufacturing to this country. That’s the kind of thing we CAN do. So do THAT! Find ways to encourage the growth of manufacturing that works for us.

This is just stupidity.

This is Trump listening to lunatics like Peter Navarro

And stop talking past me and accusing me of things that aren’t true

Sure, cut burdensome regulations and taxes on businesses, stop importing the majority of our raw materials and make them here at home; opening up drilling, mining etc. Surely that would help, right?

That's great, let's do that with everything we can?

And stop talking past me and accusing me of things that aren’t true

You do that all the time lesh, by accusing me of being a Trumper or a trump sycophant...

In fact, in both of the threads we have been in recently, you seem to be the one who is aggressive and lobbing insults. I've been very cordial and reserved, so when you get upset about me accusing you of something, maybe take a look in the mirror first?

You just keep babbling away stubbornly advocating to burn down the house

I don't want to burn down the house, I want to make it stronger...but sometimes to do that, you have to renovate and fortify the under structure.

So you’re going to “make it stronger” by
burning it the **** to the ground

**** off

You clearly misread my statement. I just said I don't want to burn it to the ground, I want to renovate it and make it stronger

And why are you so angry? Can you not just..talk...without being aggressive?

Except that what you are defending WILL burn it to the ground

There is always a conversation on tariffs. Smoot-Hartley is debatable. We were a rising nation with no real social services state and had tariffs up to a certain point that built this nation. Today the conditions are different. We are a slowly declining nation with a high tax environment and huge social services agencies. We are trying to get manufacturing to return from giving it away in past trade deals and when the competition started to make better products and lower costs with it.

Smoot-Hartley is NOT debatable. It was a disaster which deepened and lengthened the Great Depression.

"Economists warned against the act, and the stock market reacted negatively to its passage, which more or less coincided with the start of the Great Depression. It raised the price of imports to the point that they became unaffordable for all but the wealthy, and it dramatically decreased the amount of exported goods, thus contributing to bank failures, particularly in agricultural regions."

What business is going to expand to the USA with insane politics and Donald Trump in charge. Hundreds of companies have already cancelled construction on planned expansions since Trump was elected. Who knows what he'll do next?

Businesses need stability and certainty in both supply chains and export markets to plan for expansions, and Trump provides neither, with his chaos and unpredictability.

Then why are you standing there with your marshmallows, cheering the fire?

This isn't a renovation. This is a wrecking ball.

This whole thing is just batshit crazy

no, that's not what I'm defending. I'm hoping this will spur other countries to drop their tariffs

I've ready stated I don't agree with the way he's going about this, but I agree that we needed to do something to level the field

You’re defending Trump’s idiotic tariffs ya dishonest ****

This whole thing is just batshit crazy

Every time Trump does a press conference I am gobsmacked by the lies he's spewing:
  • The EU was formed to take advantage of the USA
  • A trade deficit means someone is taking advantage of you
  • If a nation sells you more goods than you buy from that county, they will have to pay the USA the difference or the tariffs won't be lifted
  • Energy prices drove inflation and energy prices were Biden's fault.
  • Prices for everything have come down since he's been in office
  • Canada and Mexico have been "cheating" on the USMCA deal
The one I bolded is fiscal insanity. Trump doesn't seem to understand how international trade works. I buy stuff from the USA. I pay money and I get what I purchased. Nobody is getting any subsidies here.

When you buy stuff from Canada, you pay the person you bought it from. No government subsidies involved.

no, that's not what I'm defending. I'm hoping this will spur other countries to drop their tariffs

There are no other tariffs to be dropped. Trump is lying about everything.

You keep talking like Trump is telling you the truth about international trade and HE'S NOT.

Trump think that if you have a trade deficit, it's because you're getting screwed.

American companies decided to offshore your jobs. Nobody "stole" them from you. But other first world nations paid for retraining their displaced workers, and steered them into growth industries. The USA did nothing for the workers.
