As far as "authoritarian" government - leftists look at it differently than libertarians. Leftists tend to think of authoritarianism in terms of democacy vs autocratic rule. But, for libertarians, it's not about who is ruling, but about our attitude to their authority. The CCP is every bit as authoritarian as Trump (or Mussolini, or the kind of "dictators" that we usually think of as authoritarian), even it's not a cult of personality led by a dictator.
IOW - democracy can be authoritarian too. Maybe it's better insulated from that, but I think we're seeing that the insulation is paper thin. Democracies are fairly easily manipulated, and a frightened electorate can be every bit as dangerous as an unhinged autocrat.
