Zone1 Tax the Rich! Make them Pay their Fair Share!

"Discriminate" is a negatively charged word in this country usually used to make a tenious association with a slavery and discrimination against minorities. But as a Brit I'm assuming you mean "discriminate", groupings within a dataset based on some criteria.

But yes, the US has on it's face a progressive Federal Income Tax system, but many aspects of overal tax burden are regressive. The OP askes about "tax burdent" which any honest examination of tax burden looks at tax burden as a percentage of income and all taxes paid.

Who has the higher tax burden as a percentage of income when total tax is a factor including:
  • Effective Federal Income Tax Rate
  • Effective State Income Tax rates
  • FICA Taxes
  • Property Tax (Land)
  • Property Tax (Non-land)
  • Sales Tax
  • Embedded Taxes (local, state, federal)

Same with the UK, tax bands increase the more you earn, so they discriminate against higher wage earners.

Do you support Trump's tariffs?
Silly, just ask Musk's AI, "Grok what is the definition of a rich person?" Swallowing a huge ass brain worm first may help.. of course. Hey, let's have a conversation!

I don't need AI to know an appeal to ridicule fallacy / attempt to divert when I see it.

Percentage of benefit from society's structure might be "fair". Those with 90% of the economic pie have that much interest in having the poor fight their wars to defend them, for example. Thus, they have that much interest in the poor being healthy enough to do so.

Remember the Dobie Gillis show?

It makes more financial sense for me to hire someone to do the less highly compensated tasks and I can devote my time to the high-skill projects.

Agreed. However the econo.y does best when a business has a very hard time finding those workers. With a continuously dropping birthrate and deportations the economy will get stronger.

Oy. So it’s good when businesses struggle to find workers, and thus can’t produce to their potential?

A couple of years ago, at a family function (graduation party), the subject of taxation came up. It wasn't me that brought it up, but I did make the mistake of kicking the hornets' nest.

The subject was mostly about the economy and Trump (again, it wasn't me), and one of my in-laws said something about "tax cuts for the rich," or "the rich not paying their fair share."

I wanted a clear answer and explanation for how to know or calculate what "their fair share" should be. That's all.

You would have thought I threatened them with a gun or something.

Needless to say, I never got an answer.

In my view, each and every citizens "tax burden" should initially be the same dollar amount. Thereafter, there should be taxes based on usage. For example, if you have a trucking company with 200 trucks running up and down the road every day.

My reasoning goes like this.

If Trump, Musk, or any other Billionaire were standing in line to buy a gallon of milk at the grocery store, should their cost for their gallon of milk be exponentially higher than what I pay, just because they have and make more money than I do?

In my view, fairness means we all pay the same.

Change My Mind.
It relates to what you should be expected to contribute to society.

The rich benefit more and should pay more

It drives wages up. Win win.
How is it a win when wages are forced to rise, and the business owner has to raise prices to stay profitable? Many business will fold, and as the ones that don’t, more people can’t afford to buy, and they eventually will fold.

You are an anti-business leftist who hates job providers and wants them to fail.

I just want american workers to be paid. Thats not being a leftist, thats being america first. Employers wont fail because they have to pay higher wages.

They are paid.

I was paid for all my jobs. Weren’t you?

Yep. I was paid quite handsomely my last 15 years of working in this godforsaken ugly rat race workworld. I had to miss many family events though that i will never get back. They were taken away from me because i had to travel a lot. The corporate world pays well but its ugly at the same time.

Life is tough, but I’m sure with your handsome salary, you enjoyed many luxuries.

I myself was able to buy an upscale townhouse and go on international vacations. When I was sitting on the balcony of my cruise stateroom, having a cup of coffee while I gazed out at the Port at Mykonos, I was thinking “damn, those mean corporations making me suffer like this!”
