A 1971 Harris poll conducted for the Veterans Administration found over 90 percent of Vietnam veterans reporting a friendly homecoming.
vietnam war statistics
9,087,000 Military personnel served on active duty during the Vietnam Era. Aug. 5, 1964 - May 7, 1975.
3,403,100 Personnel served in the Southeast Asia Theater
Even if we use the number of those who actually went to SEA, that leaves over 340,000 (10%) with less-than-friendly stories to tell. However, since most civilians have a hard time telling an Air Force uniform from a bus driver uniform, I doubt they could tell the difference between a serviceman who was returning from Viet Nam and one who just completed training and has never deployed so I'd go with the higher number.
I don't understand why lefties always have a conniption over this matter. Are they seriously denying that any servicemen were treated with less than a respectful attitude by war protesters of the day?
