Kentucky wants to ban junk food from SNAP (food stamps)

The real issue here is using SNAP to help people get back on their feet so that public assistance does not become a way of life and reserved only for those who need it the most.
But that is clearly not how it works. Families have been on it for generations.

If you want to eat your way into diabetes, heart or kidney disease
I ate a lot of candy as a kid growing up. Way too much. I'm pushing 70 now, still no diabetes, heart or kidney disease. Therefore, such diseases are as much a genetic predisposition as they might be diet related.

it should not be encouraged by government.
How is it "encouragement" to do anything by simply rightfully keeping Big Brother out of micromanaging people's lives more than they already are?

If we need to micromanage how people eat, there are better people and ways than Uncle Sam, the people who gave us USAID and three trillion in government waste and theft per year.

You don't solve a problem by turning over control of that problem to the very people who are the biggest creators of that problem in the first place! The LAST thing government is good at doing is controlling waste and fraud.

Thanks for proving my point. Government sucks at even making the payments, much less effectively running any program. The last thing they need is control over how people eat, because if nothing else, at some point, they will simply try to effect those same rules on the rest of us.

Your childhood is irrelevant.

There are many items people can’t purchase on SNAP benefits. Do you oppose those bans?

Are you fine with paying for someone to eat shitty foods all their lives and then paying for their health treatments when their shitty diet starts to cause serious health issues?

Not when it gives context on my position.

SNAP is for food. Therefore only things which contribute to consumables you either eat or drink should be part of it. As such, if a person qualifies for $200 worth of food, $200 worth of celery, peppers and beans costs exactly as much as $200 worth of Milky Ways and Mountain Dew.

But if a person is spending 100% of their budget on shit like that, I might want to ask why.

But that is exactly what some people here propose--- limiting people to eating cheap lunchmeat.

I've never met anyone who ate nothing but shit. In fact, when I see a welfare person in the grocery, they all seem to be eating better than me: lobster, steak and such!

Either way, SNAP people will probably be getting Medicaid too no matter how they eat. Last I checked, there is little or no correlation to how one eats and their healthcare costs. Most of that comes from genetic predisposition, that is why some people can wolf down lots of fattening foods and never gain a pound.

Bottom line: unless you tell me you are a medical expert, you should probably not have any opinion.

Makes sense. Why should taxpayers have to fund food that has no nutritional value?

They should be restricted to purchasing staples. Meats, potatoes, dairy products, soups, fruits and vegetables. Mostly foods which you need to prepare.

No sodas and energy drinks. No snack foods like potato chips and Twinkies and such. If they want to purchase these things, pay for it in cash.

You really are not very smart on this topic. There is a huge correleation between diet and health.

For instance, a diet of high calories will make you obese. Do you also think obesity is harmless?

Saying diet has little to no impact on your physical health and future health care costs is about as dumb as it gets. Why would someone make such a stupid claim?

I like it. I think it’s great that this is being considered at the federal level

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - A proposal that would ban most junk food from being SNAP-eligible is under consideration in Washington, D.C. and in Frankfort.

“The overall goal is to say that we recognize that these choices are not and do not provide good health outcomes,” said Rep. Matt Lockett (R-Nicholasville).

House Bill 279 seeks to exclude energy drinks, prepared desserts, such as cookies and candy, potato and corn chips and soft drinks from being purchased using SNAP benefits.

Rep. Lockett says it is a bill that is part of a larger goal to improve the health of Kentuckians both on and off the program.

Fuck you. It none of your fucking business what kind of food someone else eats.

You've been brainwashed by corrupt assholes. Drug tests will merely take money from the taxpayers and give it to corrupt politicians and their cronies. Your stupid idea would force poor disabled people who can barely walk to trek through all kinds of weather just to go take some drug test to make greedy scuzballs rich.

Fuck off.
That is a perfect example of stupidity.

Exactly! It's a travesty to see all those slackers living it up Mountain Dew and Hershey bars. Not on MY dime!
