States restrict what you can buy with SNAP benefits

Michelle Obama did not make the menus
Just suggestions on healthy foods

She opposed selling soda in schools and Republicans went ape shit
Link to the gop going apeshit over sodas sold in schools.....I would have been all for that.

I remember the whole overblown Big Gulp thing in NYC but that's about it.

In an attempt to get SNAP recipients to eat healthier, many states are placing restrictions on what you can purchase under SNAP

As of early 2026, 18+ states (including Texas, Florida, Iowa, Nebraska, and Tennessee) have received federal waivers to restrict Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits from being used for "junk food". Restrictions generally target soda, energy drinks, candy, and sometimes prepared desserts, largely taking effect through 2026.

I generally agree you should not be allowed to buy treats like candy using SNAP benefits

But I think soda has become part of our culture. Coca Cola advertises relentlessly. Having a soda with your burger and fries is part of life.
Even our own President is addicted to soda to the point where he has a button on his desk to have staff rush him a Diet Coke. He is said to drink ten or more Cokes a day.

If Republicans are so intent to keep the poor from drinking soda, our President should lead by example
Nah, I don't believe in these restrictions. The point is not to create a subclass of citizens who have to cater to an agenda.

$5 billion for “suggesting healthy foods”? Have you ever noticed every Democrat initiative costs billions of dollars? Republicans accomplish better results for free.

Please, everyone. Vote red from now on.

Republicans insist on SNAP recipients maintaining healthy diets while they resist any attempts to follow it themselves

Can any Republican who voted for the restrictions say…..poor people should not eat those foods and I don’t either.
They are bad for poor people but not rich republicans

Question…

NOTE: I don’t have a problem with the restrictions.

But if government restrictions are going to be in place, does the government bear any responsibility that the healthier alternatives be available?

In thinking areas that are called “food deserts” because traditional grocery stores are not available.

Even Petty Thieves Should Be Put on Chain Gangs

They're food deserts because feral shoplifting forces stores to leave those jungle neighborhoods.

HE IS

He does not take a salary. Did you not know this?!?!
Is he still doing that? I doubt it, called himself a schmuck for doing it. And from my understanding, the food is a big part of it. It is not that the president pays for the food, it is deducted from his salary. Trump ain't going to go negative.

Technically Trump can't NOT take his salary. The Constitution mandates he be paid (Article II, Section 1, Clause 7).

What he does is take the salary, then donates it after any required dedictions, then gets to claim the donation as a tax deduction.

Not that it make much difference since his other grifting scheme bring in lots of cash.

Let them eat Soylent Green.

What do you figure our individual out-of-pocket is for all that soda the welfare recipients are chugging down for free at our expense?
i was talking about the pop kids buy at school

they shouldn't be drinking it and there shouldn't be vending machines with it inside schools, but the taxpayers aren't paying for it. ts a completely different issue

Soda is not good for you…never has been

But sweetened Ice Tea, Fruit Drinks and many other beverages are just as bad.

If Trumps administration is so intent on keeping poor people away from Soda, Trump needs to lead by example and not mock poor people for the same habit he has
People can drink all the soda they want, but they should pay for it themselves. The problem is that SNAP people drink so much of it. I would have no problem with paying for a reasonable amount.

Rich republicans can afford the soda and the medical bills, poor people can't.

More information needed. Are people poor because they drink soda, or do they drink soda because they're poor. Hmmmm? 🤔
