Back then, yeah, it was "the basics". Which included seafood and all cuts of meats.
I never bitched about it, I appreciated whatever I could get. Thats how my granny raised me.
And yes, before computer registers, cashiers had charts or lists at their registers if they needed help in identifying EBT foods.
But like I said, they were the BASICS, so pretty much they were instantly memorable.
I wouldn't know. Never had to use food stamps.
Let's be honest about SNAP. The main advocates for the program have been the Food Industry. Otherwise, why not just let them write a check and spend it on whatever floats your boat?
What I find hypocritical is that we draw a line between "Welfare" and "Entitlements".
If you are "poor" you are on welfare, and we treat that as something you should be ashamed of. On principle, yes, no one should be eating junk food. But I don't really like the idea of the government "shaming" people over it, which is what this is. Being told by a minimum-wage cashier that you can't have that candy bar for your kids. We know what the intent here is. It's to degrade people.
But the vast majority of money being spent by the Federal government is on middle-class entitlements - Social Security, Medicare, Unemployment insurance, Veterans' benefits. And we don't attach any "shame" to those things because they are "entitled" to them.
