Kennedy Center threatens to sue musician who canceled concert after Trump's name added to building

So you don’t know if the contract has any penalties. Right?
No, I don't. None of us do because none of us has read it. What we DO know, however, is that the artist is liable for any that should be in there, and I can't imagine a venue scheduling a major event that would allow an artist to simply cancel for no good reason at a late date with no penalties. Can you imagine that? All their expenses thrown in the trash, all their preparation work trashed with no revenue, all because an artist got his underwear in a bunch over nonsense.

Artistic freedom. "I would never sign a contract with a venue with Trump's name on it".

It was to be a free concert. They’re probably saving money by canceling the event.

Then the contract should have that written in it, in the section that outlines the acceptable reasons for cancelling the concert without penalties. This is a major venue that pays a lot of money to put on an event, and I would find it highly unlikely that they would easily accept an artist cancelling a concert at a late date because he got his underwear in a bunch over nonsense.

Publicity. Don't forget the value of publicity.
It cuts both ways. The behavior of the Trump crazies on the board would lead to bad publicity for Chuck Redd and harm his reputation.

Without a definable monetary damage, the lawsuit may not get very far.

Trump and his corrupt cronies have a long history of filing frivolous lawsuits to punish their enemies.

Tell the Progs to take a hike and use the center for non prog events until Trump leaves or Republicans lose the Presidency. We are a divided nation. The good thing is that the other taxpayers get to use the federal buildings besides the Progs. Some in the Kennedy family thinks it's about them. Teddy has caused a lot of misery.

Right wingers aren’t known as great artists. They don’t value art. They don’t prioritize it.

His reputation is already being harmed by his petulance.

You think the Center is a TRUMP! crony?

Maybe amongst Trump supporters but I doubt he has many fans who are angry about this.
It may, it may not.
Lots depends on the material language of the contract which we don’t know.

He’s appointed the board and it includes highly disreputable characters engaged in disreputable behavior. These jerks even organized a group of people to heckle an artist when they performed at the center.

Art and its appreciation are highly subjective. Is Jazz more artistic than Mozart? Depends on who you're asking. Insisting someone doesn't value art because they don't value the same art that you do to the same level that you do is ridiculous. You cannot say that a guy who likes country music and never listens to Mozart doesn't value art. That just puts you in the snob category.

Yet i'm sure an artist can cancel at any time for example, medical reasons, without suffering a penalty.
So you'll need to see the contract, which by the way, was made with the Kennedy Center.
Not the Trump-Kennedy Center. So you may be alleging breech of a contract made by a different entity, unless they legally changed the name.

I won’t accept that all art is of equal value. That simply can’t be true.

What I do know is that conservatives don’t fund art or produce art at the same rate because it’s not valued the same by their culture.

Maybe a morality clause. Contracts usually contain language saying that it can be ended if a party engages in disreputable conduct. Like maybe a performer is accused of sexual assault, their contracts can be cancelled.

They illegally renamed the Kennedy Center so it may qualify.

Actually a great many people who signed contracts with Trump regret it.
The irony here is that Trump has many times not paid his contractors, and they had to sue Trump for breech of contract, for services already rendered.

The head of the Kennedy Center's leadership has recently changed: Donald J. Trump was elected Chairman of the Board by a newly appointed board

Every performer signs contracts for every venue they perform at. Whether that’s a play house, arena or stadium. You don’t get to walk out of those contracts without paying a huge penalty.
Except of course, concerts get cancelled all the time by major performers.

If I were a performer I would not cancel based on this, but if I were the Center I would not sue either. We are flying blind a bit on the actual contract terms which probably have a whole lot of outs for both sides.

If he signs a contract to perform there, he becomes liable for the penalties in the contract if he cancels. It simply doesn't matter how much you hate Orange Man.
Depends on what the cancel provisions are in the contract. I imagine there are many.

They also seem to have different standards for everything.

Remember when Zelensky went to the white house in his military attire, and they yelled at him for not wearing a suit and tie.

Yet, did you see when the Saudi Prince arrived without a suit, or tie, or shoes.

Then there is the outfit Kid Rock wore to the oval office.
