How many of you are over 30

I am 47 and a liberal, raised in a republican household. I know what the republicans have done to us the last 8 years,,,,,think I'll stay a lib.

The republicans didn't do it, a very liberal GWB did. Bush is about as conservative as carl marx was. At least when it comes to spending which is what has cost us the most. Out national Debt is the biggest problem as it drives up interest rates and drives down the value of our dollar. We could solve most of our problems if we got spending in check and started to pay down the Debt. To bad neither party will do this.

By the way I am 35 and not really a full blow Conservative. I think of my self as a pragmatist. If it works I support it, if it don't I don't.

However I know what far left government can and has led to in the past. Totalitarianism. Of course so does far right Government. The middle of the road is the way to go. This is why the prospect of a Dem Super majority in Congress and A Dem in the white house who is about as far left as they come, scares me.

Well, the middle of the road could be good,,what's your plan, I'm listening.

One thing we "libs" have is an open mind! I love discussions that stay ON TRACK, and love to hear other people's opinions. Like Voltaire said:

"I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to my death your right to say it"

You can whip up a youtube clip if you want. The Fact remains I quit watching the oped discussion on CNN because the liberals did exactly that ... turn them into shouting matches.

Kind of goes with the conservative vs liberal territory definition-wise. Denying it is silly.

Yeah, but you got to admit that O'Reilly clip is funny, right sarge?

Bullshit---I knew full well at the age of 10 what ICBMs could do. I knew how we were supposed to hide under our desks. I knew where the public "bomb shelters" were. I knew the test sirens went off the first Wednesday of every month. I saw neighbors building bomb shelters in their backyards and supplying them. I watched the news at school all day to see if anyone had hit the button yet. AND I'M STILL ROYALLY PISSED THAT WE HAD TO GO THROUGH IT.
What a bunch of bullshit false sense of security MAD gives people. Denial is all that's keeping people from being scared shitless.

No, sorry, you were too young - you've just demonstrated you didn't really understand what was going on - and you still don't. Your hysterical response is evidence of it. And your continual denial of the efficacy of MAD is another piece of evidence. By now you should be over your anger at living under the threat of a nuclear conflagration. I am. If it still makes you angry then you might need counselling because it's entirely possible it left you psychogically damaged.

Totatlitarianism isn't solely the province of the left, it's found on the right as well.

Do you think the US has ever had a left government by the way?

48.....raised by republican politicians, criminal defense attornies, and a psychologist....can get any more fucked uped

Not to let midcan be the only one with cute tirade, you must be one of those dope smokin', avatar readin', living in a commune, unwashed hippy Marxists!

LOL....43

Was. Almost went to Woodstock, was home on leave from overseas duty at the time. LOL

I knew you were a whippersnapper.

We have a left-leaning government right now, and if Obama is elected it will only go further that way.

We most certainly had one during the Great Depression. It was needed at the time as the solution to a problem. Problem is, it should have been discarded when we returned to prosperity. The programs left over from the "New Deal" are nothing but corrupt, bureaucratic shells of what they were intended to be.

I'm surprised that a school had a television set in 1962.

Labels. Totalitarianism is more the province of the left while authoritarianism is the province of the right. They equate to the same thing. It just isn't kosher for each side of the "Great Divide" here to share a trait.

Either way, the government is all and people live to serve it, and personal freedoms are at a minimum and subordinate to that.

But who is what DOES keep the two sides at each other's throats instead of watching the bureaucrats as they steal us blind.

Granted. But yer still a whippersnapper :D

I'm sorry, you have a Left leaning government now? You can't mean the Dems, they're fairly right wing and as for BushCheney no more needs to be said.

During the Great Depression you had a government that looked to solutions and not slogans. They used Keynsian economics but they weren't Left. Programmes in place then surely should have been kept in place so that the next time they were needed it wouldn't be necessary to crank them up with the lead time it would take to make them effective.

I'm happy to accept the totalitarianism/authoritarianism realisation can occur from either end of the spectrum. For me it's an evil and that's it.

What we all want and need is good government and that requires us citizens to be critical thinkers and not fawning hacks.

I was 10 during the Cuban missle crisis. After being made acutely aware that I could be here one minute and gone the next without even having a prayer to defend myself, I got pissed. I turned 18 while the draft was still in full swing for Viet Nam and got pissed. Let some of those damn nukes fly and quit pussy-footing around with ground troops. Screw MAD.

well crap, I'm older than everyone listed here so far...

I'm talking about our government as a whole. It isn't Bush/Cheney. It's Bush, and he's no traditional conservative. He made his name here as Governor by appeasing the left, and some of his left-leaning policies just flat-out suck.

The Great Depression was 80 years ago. Democrats and Republicans weren't even defined by the same values then as now. My entire family was Democrat, and I followed along until Jimmy Carter lobotomized the party.

Fact remains, our big brother, handout program government is hardly the stalwart of conservatism. As you know, that's all relative to where you are. A liberal on the East Coast (with the exception of New England) is a conservative on the West Coast here. A liberal here in Texas is NOT a liberal in NY.

If there isn't a constant even from coast to coast/north to south, I don't expect that ocean between us and you is helping. You're looking at us from YOUR definition of "liberal."

I honestly thought of retiring in Australia but I couldn't stand y'all's socialist crap and when you took away people's guns, it was over. I rather liked Townseville though.
