I'm better off than a lot of seniors - well above the minimum annual income, and my retirement income is very similar to a friend who is still working full time making about 25% above minimum wage. Under the Conservative plan to let me keep more of "my money", my net income went down by $2500 per year. Under Justin Trudeau, my income has gone up $2,000 per year. Guess who I voted for?

We don't spend all of our time trying to figure out how a 200 year old document for running a coastal nation of less than 3 million people applies to the United States today, or whether the Founders were liberal or conservative.

We don't have a conservative/liberal divide in running the country - we have a French/English divide "Les Deux Solitudes". Conservatives don't blame Liberals for the countries problems. They blame Quebec. The name "Trudeau" to Conservatives, is worse than "Clinton" to the Republicans.

Canada was born when Wolfe defeated Montcalm on the Plains of Abraham in 1758, but like the USA, we were a British colony. Each of what now consistutes the Provinces had an autonomous relationship with Great Britain. When Confederate was proposed in the 1860's to unite the Provinces in a nation, Quebecers worried that their culture would overwhelmed by the English majority and they would lose their language and their culture.

English Canada was sold on Confederation as Uniting the Provinces into one nation with a strong central government. The French were sold on Confederation as "Two solitudes". Two automous cultures, each with their own sets of laws and government structures. Each side now thinks they were sold a bill of goods and their side is getting a raw deal. Fucking Frogs won't even learn to speak English, or put up bi-lingual signs. But if you can't speak French you can't get a government job. That goes over well in Calgary. Why do government workers in Calgary have to speak French to a get government job?

Going to Quebec, is like going to an entirely different country - in Europe. I am more at home in Buffalo than I am in Montreal. Quebecers will treat English speaking Canadians very badly if you don't even try to speak French. Travelling through the Central Train Station in Montreal, with all signage for connection trains in French was a fucking horror.

Brian Mulroney tried to change Trudeau's Constitution, which Quebec has never ratified. The Amendments would have brought Quebec into the Constitution, but at a cost. There were National Referendums on his negotiated amendments both of which failed. One of Mulroney's amendment would have given Quebec 25% of the seats in the Senate, regardless of population. It was a really bad deal but Quebec took it as "We don't want them". It didn't help either side. Separatism always simmers in Quebec, and occasionally boils up.

Quebec has voted on separation - twice. And both times the province voted to stay. Trudeau Sr. sent the army into Quebec when FLQ terrorists murdered a British Ambassador and starting blowing things up in the 1970's.

Your country has become a lab for conservative economic policies. And none of it is good. What good is being the richest most productive people on earth if ALL of your citizens aren't participating in that. I loved the premium cadillac supplemental health insurance I had on Bay Street - I paid nothing. Now I have to buy my glasses and applicances, only basic hospital is covered - wards, and dental. Anyone can buy that supplemental coverage for about $2500 per year, so your complaints about the health insurance are bogus. It's damn a sight better than Medicare, or worse, no coverage at all for those under 65.

They did this despite having so little, because they were so grateful to Canada for the opportunity given them. These are the people the USA refused to let in.

Our labour participation rate is rising, while yours is falling. Our life expectancy is increasing, while yours is decling. Our middle class is growing while yours is shrinking. We're welcoming immigrants who are making wonderful contributions to our country, because we welcome them. We don't lock them up and take their babies.

One of the most touching stories out the fire that destoyed Fort McMurray during the Syrian refugee crisis, was that the recently arrived Syrian refugee groups in Calgary, who really had nothing but what they could carry when they arrived, banded together and sent "personal care kits" of toothpaste, soap, shampoo and other personal care items to the families displaced by the fire, because when they were in the refugee camps, these were things they didn't have and needed most. They did this despite having so little, because they were so grateful to Canada for the opportunity given them. These are the people the USA refused to let in.

Yes, some Canadians move to the USA. I've had lots of chances to do so. I've been to the USA lots of times, but why would I live in a country that is run for the wealthy, and takes all of my tax money to give to underpaid corporate workers and the military, whose wages are so low they can't provide for their families, when my taxes could go to building a strong nation with quality health care and education for all, infrastruture and programs to raise the quality of life for all Canadians, not just the wealthy? We have literally hundreds of thousands of Americans moving to Canada to escape the crime, the dirt, and the lack of opportunity in the US. The iconic Canadian company Roots was founded by Expat Americans.

All of my American friends who come here tell me they wish the USA was more like Canada. I've never seen a Canadian who said "I wish Canada was more like the USA. More guns, no public health care, and more tax breaks for millionaires".

Recently, the Conservative Party of Canada ran on a tax cutting, more money in YOUR pocket platform. I sat down one day and did a deep financial dive on this "pro-family" tax cut agenda. The conservative plan would cut the carbon tax, increase the basic deduction for seniors by $1000, and yada, yada.

I calculated what these wonderful benefits would do for me. I'm better off than a lot of seniors - well above the minimum annual income, and my retirement income is very similar to a friend who is still working full time making about 25% above minimum wage. Under the Conservative plan to let me keep more of "my money", my net income went down by $2500 per year. Under Justin Trudeau, my income has gone up $2,000 per year. Guess who I voted for?

American conservative have been conned into believing that tax cuts for millionaires will put money money in their pockets, eventually. It doesn't. It takes money out of your pocket and gives it to the millionaires. Canadians voters are smart enough to know that.
