Because it’s not about them, it’s about satisfying your own indignation. Whether they’re actually helped by any of this isn’t the point. You’re helped. That’s the point.
It isn’t about motives, the motive for all of us should be to look out for the health and welfare of everyone. It is the government’s money, using taxpayer dollars and they have a right to protect their interests and the taxpayers interest. When you are awarded WIC money, from the government, it can only use it on foods with verified nutritional value. When the government gives out housing vouchers, you can’t use them to get into a luxury apartment, when you get a student loan, you can’t go buy a car with it, it is restricted.
The government has a responsibility to protect their citizens. The negative health effects of just one can of soda can lead to the government spending millions later on for healthcare.
This shouldn’t be a political battle and both sides making it one is moronic, it is about what is right for those receiving the funding.
This is the effect of one soda a day:
1. Type 2 Diabetes: One 12-ounce can of soda daily increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by about 26%.
Why? The high sugar content spikes insulin levels, leading over time to insulin resistance.
2. Heart Disease: Daily consumption is linked to a 20% higher risk of heart attack or death from heart disease. Soda contributes to inflammation, high triglycerides, obesity, and high blood pressure.
3. Obesity: Just one can of soda a day can add up to 15 pounds of weight gain per year if calories aren’t offset elsewhere. Liquid sugar doesn’t make you feel full, so you eat more overall.
4. Fatty Liver Disease: Soda contains fructose, which is metabolized in the liver and converted to fat. Daily intake can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
5. Gout: High levels of fructose can raise uric acid, increasing the risk of gout—an extremely painful joint condition.
6. Cognitive Decline and Alzheimer’s Risk: Emerging research links daily sugary drink intake to smaller brain volume, poorer memory, and a higher risk of dementia, especially when paired with metabolic syndrome.
7. Tooth Decay and Cavities: Soda is acidic and full of sugar, creating the perfect storm for enamel erosion and cavities, even with decent dental hygiene.
