Why is Socialism so popular all of a sudden

Love it or hate it, is it not peculiar an idea that has been so taboo in our society is now mainstream, what happened? Why is socialism suddenly so popular?

When I went to school in the 60s and 70s we learned the constitution and how the constitution requires America to have both socialism and capitalism.

Socialism helped to build America. Along with Capitalism.

Both have their benefits. Both have their drawbacks.

Which is why the founders of our nation included the power for the congress to regulate commerce in the constitution.

Do you like that water that comes from the tap when you turn it on? That infrastructure was built by socialism. If where you live has not sold that water infrastructure to a private company, it's still socialism. Like where I live. I pay the city I live in for that water.

How about that sewage system you use daily? It was built by socialism. If it has not been sold off to private business, it's still socialism. Like where I live. That sewage bill comes from the city with the water bill.

Do you like the military? Most people do though a lot of us don't want so much spent on it. The military is also socialism.

Do you like FEMA? I'm sure those hit by those hurricanes and tornados do. It's socialism.

Do you like that electricity that powers your home? That infrastructure was built by socialism. If your area has not sold it off to private business it's still socialism. As with where I live. I pay the Public Utility District every month for that electricity.

Do you like that road you drive on and that makes it possible for goods to be brought to market for you to buy? It was built by socialism and it's still socialism.

Do you like the education you received if you went to public schools? It's socialism.

Do you like that doctor who you go to when you're sick or injured or who will some day save your life from a hearth attack or fatal disease in the future when you're older? That doctor went to a public school so socialism taught him and made it possible for your life to be saved by that person.

Do you like that the police, firefighters and first responders are there when you need them? That's socialism.

All that and so much more are required by our constitution and is constitutional. It's also things that we Americans take for granted everyday yet would be extremely upset if they weren't here.

The reason why it's popular these days is because business has been given more rights than people. Conservatives have taken rights from workers such as the right to organize and to have overtime pay in some positions. Conservatives are trying to take our insurance and health care from us.

We see conservatives giving huge tax cuts to big business while workers get pennies. While we see our national debt and deficit skyrocket with no relief in sight.

Conservatives refuse to raise the minimum wage to help close the wage gap. We see the wage gap getting larger and larger.

What conservatives don't understand that people will only take so much. They will start to raise their voices and vote for people who will will work for all the people of America. Not just a few.

All successful developed first world nations are a hybrid of both capitalism and socialism.

Average Joes are tired of being stomped on by the American oligarchy.

You'd rather be stomped on by socialist dictators eh?
If your socialism includes dictators you aren't doing it right.

So far they haven’t ever done it right...

Why do you say that? Sweden, Denmark, and Norway all seem to be doing fine.

No dictators either.

We must recognize that we can’t solve our problem now until there is a radical redistribution of economic and political power… this means a revolution of values and other things. We must see now that the evils of racism, economic exploitation and militarism are all tied together… you can’t really get rid of one without getting rid of the others… the whole structure of American life must be changed. America is a hypocritical nation and [we] must put [our] own house in order.

Along with the rise in the popularity of socialism we see a rise in a white populist nationalism. A sure sign that most everyone in the country recognizes that something has gone awry. And a foreboding of things to come. History has already been witness to this scenario in Europe once before.

Yep.

The only question is where along the axis a country chooses to be, i.e., "more" socialism or "less" socialism.

Unfortunately, many have been trained to view this an an "all or nothing" proposition, which renders them useless (and counter-productive) in the conversation.

They are entirely beneficial to the ruling class who would just as soon keep their wealth as to redistribute it.

We accepted "some" socialism with the New Deal, that's the main problem with socialism though; it's never enough. It'll keep going until there is no more money and the entire thing collapses under the weight of buying votes.

the 60's hippies are now grandparents

multiple generations of people that hate the Greatest generation are now able to vote.

what's more counter culture to Americans? Nonindepence.

and socialism offers people slavery and free shit

About half of Americans support single-payer health care - "As President Trump’s administration tries to chip away at the Affordable Care Act by giving more authority to states to regulate private insurance, a new poll finds a slight majority of Americans support a move in the opposite direction, with everyone getting health insurance from a national government-run program.

A Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation poll finds a 51 percent majority of Americans support a national health plan, also known as a single-payer plan, while 43 percent oppose it."

I would MUCH rather see an expansion of the current Medicare / Medicare Advantage / Medicare Supplement system to all, but the Right has done such a pathetic job of addressing this issue that I suspect Single Payer could be where we end up.

Which is Medicare – a successful program that already exists; a program that can and should be expanded to allow all Americans access to affordable healthcare.

And Medicare/single-payer health insurance is not ‘socialism’ – to maintain otherwise is ignorant idiocy.

I worked for a call center that provide part d

once or twice a week someone would call and declare they were not dead.

medicare, the government, declared them dead and cancelled their insurance. Just so you know, it takes at least 3 months to prove you are alive.

no, imagine you need, absolutely need, medication
or you need to go to the hospital

now multiply that by 20

then try to understand that the government can't run what it does run and will utterly fuck up peoples lives, everyone's lives.

Leftists have taken over education, the media, and the government.

Add to this the dangling carrot of, "Let's take from the rich and give to you!" dogma, and there you have it.

Not really hard to understand.

In Venezuela, they are eating out of garbage cans, yet socialism is as popular as ever.

That is the scary part. It's like drinking the cool aide and not even being able to die. They are now the walking dead.
