Pragmatism: Rubio sponsors bill to keep daylight savings time year round

FLORIDA — If it makes its way through Congress, a bill filed by U.S. Sen. Marco Rubiocould make Daylight Saving Time permanent for everyone in the United States.

The Orlando Sentinel reports Rubio’s Sunshine Protection Act of 2019 was to be introduced Wednesday. It would make Daylight Saving Time year-round. The newspaper reports that a companion bill was filed in the House by U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan.

If the bill is approved, clocks would be set ahead one hour permanently, giving everyone an extra hour of sunlight in the evening during the winter months.

About damn time too. I don't know why Trump didn't come up with this first. If you want pragmatism all the time, you need to keep Republicans in office.

Just curios as to how many Socialists will be against this; not because it's a bad idea, but simply because a Republican came up with it?

I think the clocks should be moved back 1 hour and then left alone. However I would like to get rid of this moving back and forth constantly.

Well if you move them back then it gets dark earlier. Crappy for working around the yard, picnics and kids wanting to endlessly play. Then in the winter as already stated, it gets dark at 5:00 pm.

I have no problem with that. I hate daylight lasting until 7:30-8PM during the summer. If some guy wants in checkered shorts want to play golf then let them get up a hour earlier. However my main desire is to quite monkeying with the clock.

There are only about 9 daylight hours during midwinter. Applying savings time then means school will either have to start later or kids will be going to school well before dawn.

Yeah, I understand that was one of the reasons they started moving around the clocks in the first place. But not many kids walk a mile to school anymore. Parents drive them or the school bus picks them up. Even during this time here, it's still dark in the mornings in November, December and January.
My work day starts at dawn and lasts 8-9 hours but for people who do not set their own schedule this would cause some pretty significant problems. I hate the fall time change every year but I realize the necessity of it for a world that lives by the time clock.

I don't know why it would bother working people. I work outside, I'm a truck driver. But if I worked inside, it wouldn't bother me how light or dark it was outside because I wouldn't be in it.

I find these replies pretty interesting. I assumed that most people thought like me. In another topic I brought up how the government should move our country into a 4-10 hour day instead of a 5-8 hour day so most of us get a three day weekend every weekend. Most people agreed with my suggestion, but I was shocked to learn that a few would be against it.

Just out of curiosity, why do long days bother you?

The point I am trying to make is that it's easier to reset the clocks than to move the start of the work/school day for everyone. Every retail business, school, government office, bank etc. would have to adopt winter hours. People are not going to go out and conduct commerce until it's daylight.

I think Arizona already does this. Anyone in AZ to tell us if it has affected you one way or another?

I like the idea of more light in the evening. I also understand the concerns of parents of school-aged children who have to walk to school or catch a bus in the morning and don't want them to have to do it in the dark. Then again, perhaps they should start school an hour later in the day. :)

Maybe I'm not understanding your point here. Why would we have to move anything? You start at the same time and end at the same time work or school. I don't see why that would have to change any. Daylight savings time is what we will be on next month, not now.

Did you bother to research how many Dems have sponsored similar legislation in the past?

Do you even know who traditionally opposes this change?

I don't see any difference because even when it's not daylight savings, they are still going to school in the dark.

You mean like they were for a border wall?

The point I made in the OP is that the only reason they'd be against it is because it was a Republican idea.

I don't know about Arizona, but I do know that Indiana doesn't have time changes. I don't know what time they keep however.

Sure.

My 15 year-old son's first class is at seven fucking twenty in the MORNING. That is insane. He gets out at 2:20. I think they should start them at 8:30 and get our at 4:30, but there is the issue of not enough buses so they have to bus the high school kids early in the morning so the buses can then go out thereafter for the middle school and elementary kids.

Yeah, AZ doesnt observe DST. I think there is a law that says states can choose whether or not they want to observe or.

AZ stays on mst all year, well most of AZ. I think the NE corner still does time change.

I agree, should have been done before now.

Now that really sounds Fd up. It's one thing for an entire state to change, but it must really screw people up if the state has two different standards of time setting.

Lol, sounds more like a school problem than a time problem.

I sure wouldn't miss running around the house changing my thermostat, changing my microwave, changing my old alarm clocks, changing my car clock, changing my stove clock.
