Yes, the answer is easy. They were doomed to have enmity between one another by professing to believe in things they don't understand, can't explain rationally, and contradict reality. In other words, mental illness.

The problem for Christianity began after Rome usurped authority over scripture and superstitious and irrational Pagans created Church dogma based on misinterpretations of Jewish teachings, hidden in booby-trapped fairy tales, hidden teaching that they could never grasp especially after killing off everyone who held the keys to understanding "the secret of the kingdom of God". see Mark 4:11

You may believe that no one can ever know exactly what the teaching is that was intended by the authors of scripture, but I have no such faith. Its not even possible for me to believe that.

Stories written by men in a book they call Instruction are about one thing or another, not just anything.

While that may be true, it doesnt mean that we know exactly what was intended. Why so many sects? Why so much disagreement about nearly every detail in the Bible not just between sects, but within sects?

If you want to know what the stories are actually about you have to be up to the challenge to set aside your opinions, prejudices and resentments, sober up your silly self, and think a little more deeply about it.

You'll get better morality out of Dr Seuss books. They are also deeper than the cartoons depicted.

You really have no way of knowing that having wasted your time deriding what the stories are not about with people who do not know what its about.

If modern people have some better morality how is it that to this day talking serpents are thought of as a dedicated holy men and not as contemptible low-lifes as depicted in scripture?

The morality of the bible can be summed up as such: the central character drowns nearly everyone in his own flood then tries to tell everyone else how to be moral. A complete joke.
