Will Republicans end social security?

No such thing would ever happen, period.

They should raise the retirement age to 70, though. And index the eligibility age to 9 percent of the population going forward.

What "they" should do is stop the oppression of the government taking your money by force and making you participate in a stupid retirement plan run by corrupt politicians elected by special interest groups.

The only people who get screwed are people who die young. People who live long benefit from the program. And it's very popular.

It wasn't discussed during the elections but does any one doubt SS is going to be put on the chopping block?

No way one usmb Republican will say they like and want to keep SS.

And if they want to at least tell us in 2019 so we can vote on it.

I do not LIKE SS, as it is budgetary Armageddon, that may very well destroy US.

But is has also made hundreds of millions of people dependent on the government, just as planned.


There may not be an answer other than to try to prepare for the crash and burn.


Ideally I would like to plan a retirement that does NOT depend on SS, being there. But unfortunately they are taxing me so much that it is hard.

Pretty pathetic savings if you couldn't retire without your social security and medicare. Now imagine how many people are like you and won't/haven't saved a dime. It's people like you why we invented the program. You'll need it. But I get it. Let people worry about themselves. If they are smart they'll save it. Most won't, especially when the cost of living goes up and wages don't go up in your republican experiment. I bet they'll go down. So millions will be screwed in 100 years but hey, rich people will get their tax breaks and we'll be able to buy a lot of bombs hopefully we will never have to use.

My savings and investments are not pathetic.

People like me are NOT the reason the program was invented.

Nothing in my post has anything to do with the paradigm "let people worry about themselves".

Everything policy that Trump has is designed encourage rising wages.

No where near the wages that we had back when America was great. You're talking about going from $10 hr to $15. I'm talking about $35 hr jobs with benefits.

I can agree with that. If they are going to end it, which I don't think they should, but if they are, it should be gradual and not screw the people who paid into it.

But ending it will mean massive cuts to the people who did pay into it. You can't pretend there won't be pain in ending the program for people who paid in.

So the train continues to fly uncontrollably down the track towards the bridge over the ravine where there is a section of track missing....

2. All I know is that the US govt has in its possession a great deal of MY money that it has STOLEN from me involuntarily over several decades and continues to do so - 'IN MY BEST INTEREST - with the promise of eventually giving me back SOME if it.

All I know is if the govt ever ends the Social Security program SOMEBODY in the federal govt is going to cut me a damn check for all of MY money they have taken for DECADES.

If not, I will be one the pitch fork and torch-carrying 'villagers' who storm Pelosi and her politician buddies' 2nd and 3rd homes to claim them or some portion of them for myself since they acquired their multiple homes and wealth using ny social Security and other tax money!

And then we will find more people working until they die, more homeless senior citizens and a greater gulf between the haves and the have nots.

Do some research and look at census records from before Social Security. These records show a large number of people housed at the same address, and most are widows and their children, or workers hurt on the job, or too old to work. Many were Civil War Vets who lost limbs and were mustered out with less than nothing, missing an arm, a leg, a hand and a future.

These people will live in poor houses; let's not pretend such will not once again be common if the Republican and even the Libertarian Party ideology becomes the new normal.
