Jeff Gluck’s palpable frustration after the race at Nashville concluded seems to have sparked a new debate among fans. Gluck believes that the sport is now demanding too much from its fans, with races stretching deep into the night and causing trouble for blue-collar supporters.
Take, for example, the Cracker Barrel 400 itself, which was already scheduled as a Sunday night event before rain delayed the start by nearly 80 minutes, turning it into a race that stretched close to midnight on the East Coast.
Gluck did not mince his words.
“I’m too old for this,” he said. “I am officially too old for night races.” He then pointed directly toward NASCAR’s core audience. “People have to work tomorrow, and especially like blue-collar NASCAR fans. People have jobs where they’ve got to get up early.”
“Sometimes less is more,” as Bianchi put it, because fans should be comfortable enough watching an extended race instead of always looking at the ticking clock and wondering, “Jeez, I got to work tomorrow.”
I was put off that NASCAR would air a 400 mile race on Sunday night.
Though I'm long retired I'm not gonna sit up and watch a race into the wee hours when I have an 0800 doctor appointment the next morning so I did not even bother with it.
They used to have their night races on a Saturday night and that worked out well enough.
NASCAR should realize, they are not the NFL. Their watchers are older and are working class folks.
