Trump went on at great length about the supposed scourge of the Social Security Administration wrongly paying retirement benefits to people listed in the agency’s system as well over 100 years old.

“A lot of money is paid out to people because it just keeps getting paid and paid and nobody ― it really hurts Social Security and hurts our country,” Trump said. “1.3 million people from ages 150 to 159 and over 130,000 people, according to the Social Security databases, are over 160 years old. We have a healthier country than I thought.”

The super elderly Social Security recipients myth got debunked last month

The fact that Trump still plowed ahead with the bogus story in his address to Congress and said Social Security is full of “probable fraud” could be a bad sign for the popular retirement program
SS is filled with huge fraud!

I do not LIKE SS, as it is budgetary Armageddon, that may very well destroy US.

But is has also made hundreds of millions of people dependent on the government, just as planned.

There may not be an answer other than to try to prepare for the crash and burn.

Ideally I would like to plan a retirement that does NOT depend on SS, being there. But unfortunately they are taxing me so much that it is hard.
Without SS millions would still be dependent on government as they would have no or little retirement savings.

It is the success of the program that is troublesome, not its failure. The government borrowed the SS Trust Fund and now has to pay it back. Boo hoo. I never liked paying my debts either, but I didn't piss and moan about it.

What is known is that all of those impossibly old people are "on the roles" of Social Security. Just like dead people on voter roles. That is fact. The focus now is finding out which of these impossibly old people are receiving benefits and WHO is receiving them.

Why are you answering a post that is over 8 years old?

You do realize that they are paying back your money with your money don’t you?

Why the hysteria. SS isn't going broke. When the Trust Fund is gone in 2035 the program will return to pay-as-you-go and recipients will take a 17 percent hit. Not the end of the world. Also, we don't know what the economy will be in 2035. It might be great if manufacturing has returned. SS may even have excess funds again.

Also, there are other programs, like SNAP, that can make up for the 17 percent reduction in SS bennies if the person qualifies.

Cause Trump looks like he's about to attack social security. Should I wait until it's too late and it's already done?

Money that I would not have saved or invested. That's the reason for the program in the first place. People aren't very forward thinking. Even today where money abounds people just don't save enough for retirement. Also, many are forced into retirement before they are financially ready.

I love the program. But if Republicans want to change the program so that the money you put in is yours even if you die before 65, I'd be okay with that. Just don't have that change **** with my payout. For example if I'm supposed to get $2000 a month when I retire, I don't want Trump's "fix" to require I take a 20% cut to my benefits.

It's amazing how Republicans would accept it if a Republican president did this to them.

It wasn't discussed during the elections but does any one doubt SS is going to be put on the chopping block?

No way one usmb Republican will say they like and want to keep SS.

And if they want to at least tell us in 2019 so we can vote on it.
It's been their decades long goal, so I certainly expect them to try.

I love it too. It's the most successful government program ever devised and absolutely necessary.

It's a put and take program. You'll have to take what's there when it's your time to collect. I'm taxed nearly $4,000/yr. because I have other income streams. If Trump succeeds in removing taxes on SS the Trust Fund will go bust 6 years sooner (according to SS). Because I have other retirement income streams, I don't mind paying the tax if it helps to keep the system afloat.

I just want to see some interviews with the 360 year-old. Imagine the stories!

Yes nobody actually believes people are that old, hence why paying these fake people is fraud, waste and abuse

What pisses me off is while they tell us the program is going broke, they continue to give retirees ss COLA's. They need to freeze what you get. I don't care if inflation happens. If you get $2000 a month now, that's what you get 20 years from now.

If any. If Elmo’s clowns could find them , why can’t he say whether any really drew benefits?

People who were forced to fund the program should get back the money they paid in plus reasonable interest. Other than that, young people should be "allowed" to opt out of the program and invest their money as they see fit.

Don't forget that half is paid by your employer. That makes it a pretty good investment, all things considered.

That would only work if all wages were also frozen.

Where the money comes from has no bearing on whether it's a good investment. If employees want to do something with that money besides invest it with government approved vendors, that should be their right

Which would destroy the program

Of course thatIS the goal
