Why do you still need proof of vaccination to get into the US and Canada?

It's ridiculous. We know it doesn't prevent transmission or infection. You can fly right into England and it's all back to normal, but any foreigner traveling the US or Canada still has to show proof of being current with that ineffective jab to get into the country. If you are a US citizen traveling back into the US, even if you do have proof of vaccination, you still need a negative Covid test. The UK had one of the highest Covid death rates in the world and even they have come their senses and removed all Covid related travel requirements. No vaccination proof, no test results, no quarantine rules, no passenger locator form - nothing. Why is the US still clinging to this bullshit?
