What is Reedy Creek?

Reedy Creek is the name for the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a special purpose district created by state law in May 1967 that gives The Walt Disney Company governmental control over the land in and around its central Florida theme parks. The district sits southwest of Orlando.

At the time, the land was little more than uninhabited pasture and swamp, according to Reedy Creek's website. With the special purpose district, Disney took over responsibility for providing municipal services like power, water, roads and fire protection -- but were also freed from dealing with legal red tape or paying taxes for services that benefited the broader public.

I know lots of libertarians who dream of a micronation that could operate on libertarian principles. How much grease did the Mouse have to apply to the state legislatures to get that?

Glad they are losing it.

All Disney had to do to keep their special status was do what they do best and entertain people while staying out of politics. Seems easy enough, right? Apparently not.

Yeah, because this isn't the Disney of 1966, the business that catered to wholesomeness and Christianity. Now The Chinese OWN Disney and they push this inane liberal drivel/ nonsense. (Crapola China would NEVER allow in the communist people's republic, if that doesn't say it ALL). Men can have babies! Push pedophilia on 6 year old kids...That's "Disney" NOW.

50 yrs but it’s ok it’s Disney and they are a protected class of “ gay”

Walt Disney wasn't a libertarian. Disney had a very definite vision of the future. Many of us grew up with Disney's idea of a future of clean, planned cities, with modern transportation. Disney's vision was very much a collective.

When Disney started his "Florida Project" before his death, which culminated in the opening of Disney World in 1971, his plan included Experimental Planned Community of the Future (EPCOT) which was never intended to be an attraction, but an actual housing community for Disney employees. A company town for Disney cast members (Walt's term for Disney employees who worked in the parks).

Disney's death derailed EPCOT as a stand-alone community, along with the fact that no one who worked at the park was interested in spending the other 16-hours a day living in Disney's gulag.

Of course, the Disney prediction of planned cities, monorails, people movers, jet packs and vacations on The Moon, all of which require massive collective investment, didn't materialize and was surpassed by the more individual-based technologies of The Internet, Social Media, and personal computing.

Reedy Creek is a small town that serves Disney. Fire station, security. power, water, sewer is all taken care of by them which Disney owns. They are 100% self contained

It's like they just can't help themselves.

I dont understand how you couldnt understand how they could get that exemption??

they are close to being the biggest corporation in the world in one spot,, of course they could ask and based on the revenue the produced for the state its reasonable they got it,, and understandable why they lost it,,

We have a lot of problems here in Florida but Disney is not one of them. DeSantis fucking with our biggest employer just because he wants to run for president is not going to turn out well for him.

There are so many diverse groups that have majority shares in Disney.

Yeah, I get that it makes sense. I just didn't know that was a thing.

Of course it will. In Florida and in his quest for the White House.

If he follows Abbott's lead and sends Biden's illegals to him, he'll only have one obstacle to being president, which I won't mention because it needs its own thread.

Let's take the "vanguard group".
The Vanguard Group Inc., one of the world’s biggest asset managers, said it has dropped plans to set up a wholly owned mutual fund company in China, and will instead focus on growing its business in the country through its robo-advisory joint venture with Chinese fintech giant Ant Group Co. Ltd.

Come on Mary! Why are you lying to try and prove a point? The Chinese Disneyland is owned by China, but Disney has a 43% stake in it. Major investment banks own most of Disney stock here in the US.

So you were lying when you claimed it was owned by the Chinese?

The state benefited as much, if not more, than did Disney from the arrangement.
