We’re Going to Defend Taiwan?

President Biden made the announcement.

I disagree completely with that stance.

No doubt two weeks after China invades he'll threaten sanctions in their defense just like he did in Ukraine.

That'll teach those commies!

Here's the underlying problem.

Legally, China can invade Taiwan because Taiwan is recognized as a part of China. Don't think the Ukraine, think Chechnya, which is still part of Russia even though hit has some defacto autonomy.

Practically, they won't. There's too much Taiwanese investment in the mainland that would dry up if they invaded. Think of Beijing and Taipei as a married couple that stopped having sex years ago, sleep in separate bedrooms, but still live in the same house.

The ONLY thing that would provoke China into invasion is if Taiwan declares itself independent instead of maintaining the fiction they are the government of China.

You must be so proud, Biden is going to get us in a war with China….

And if he didn't, you'd be whining he isn't protecting our friends.

It must be a sad existence to wait every morning to find out what Biden is for, so you know what you are against, Anger Issues.

"Baseball and Apple Pie! Biden likes those? I hate them!"

Biden by a report is supposed to introduce a new trade deal perhaps today called the Indo-Pacific trade pact. And Taiwan is not on it. Legit? So what's the deal?

Taiwan is not a soveriegn nation recognized by the US.
But that is a sticking point. Before Trump left office. Taiwan was recognized though as a sovereign nation. The location of Taiwan would give China a massive power boost as they would have free reign with their navy and block trade if they see fit.

We don’t need another war and certainly not one with China. However it seems many Americans are now conditioned to accept being at war at all times.

Plus with the crazed partisanship that now consumes many Americans, Rs will immediately criticize old Joe if he fails to militarily protect Taiwan as we see in this thread.

Most of us are conditioned to believe we should honor our promises and commitments abroad.

If China isn't opposed in invading Taiwan, there is nothing to stop them from scooping up huge swaths of the western Pacific just like Japan did in the thirties and early 40's.

Since they've been following the Japanese expansion model for 20 years it's a reasonable concern that they would follow suit with even more invasions.

Who committed us to warring with China over Taiwan?

Plus our political class has never honored it’s commitments. Read history and find out.

There you go again with the discredited and ignorant domino theory. You’ve been conditioned to believe if any foreign nation invaded another, the invader wants world domination. The war profiteers love people like you. You’re easily propagandized. The weird thing is your cool with the US invading nations 24/7 and seeking world domination.

China is following Japan’s model??? Really?

Hopefully biden will manage to do at least one thing rigjt while he’s president

Defending Taiwan could be that one bright spot on an otherwise dismal presidency
