USMB Coffee Shop IV

I envy you that. I grew up in those kinds of places even though one was also oil patch but that meant we had some of the finest schools in the country and I got an education that allowed me to compete with anybody. But yes a small rural town with almost everybody sharing values and traditions so you don't have much if any chaos ever is the best place in the world to grow up.

Yes, the early education I got from Midwest schools gave me so much! Critical thinking and a good sized smattering of Latin. It's my own fault that I gave up on mathematics when we moved to the Left Coast, but I got through enough schooling to give me a career that made me happy.

Me too except for the Latin though I got a lot of Latin through our outstanding music teacher who had us singing a lot of it and insisted that we understand what we were singing. :)

But I got a solid grounding in all the core subjects of English, math, science, history, geography, etc. plus opportunity to learn some super valuable skills like touch typing, shorthand, bookkeeping/accounting, home ect. etc. And strong emphasis on analysis, critical thinking, evaluation, pros and cons of various beliefs, philosophies, concepts etc. while I couldn't tell you the sociopolitical or religious views of any of my teachers.

Small towns are great places to grow up.

I'll bet you know how to actually appreciate Carmina Burana!

I just shared this with my chiropractor who sings with our chorus. I almost ended up a little wad of wet kleenex at their Easter Cantata! He said it was hard to sing it because there were so many emotional reactions in the audience. It was amazing!

Part of what I love about being a Catholic is singing and praying in Latin! We have a Latin Mass, but it's 30 miles from where I live.

My late husband sang in the chorus of a major opera company and he just made me crazy because he'd fake all the lyric. He did okay in Latin because he grew up Catholic, but he totally faked the Italian, French and German.

My sister was also an opera singer before she became a music educator. She wasn't raised Catholic but did marry a Catholic and joined the Catholic Church. But she admitted she faked a lot of Latin/foreign language lyrics too. :) And oh my goodness. I don't think I've even heard Carmina Burana since college choir when it wasn't even a classic yet. But alas I would definitely have to fake the lyrics now. :)

I once tried to coach my husband in the French language for an aria from Carmen, and he just didn't care about the words, as long as he could hit the notes. This is why he was not destined to be a principal, and only to stay in the chorus. His leftist daughter was absolutely convinced that he could have been a star but was discriminated against because of his Asian ethnicity. I just rolled my eyes.

Don't remember if I showed off my latest selfie or not, been a while........

:p

Just thought that it was rather remarkable that these two photographs were separated by only 66 years:

And now 56 years after the first moonwalk, what do you think? The world's technology has increased another fourfold--400+%? I wonder if anyone has taken time to calculate that data and how that might be done?

I always hated long-division.....which is basically not even needed if you have a calculator.

But when I was a kid they didn't even let us use sliderules.
