He said he did not "want" to be known as a wartime president and wouldn't "start" a war. The war between Israel and Iran was started by Iran and as the US is an ally of Israel and Iran threatened that any governments that allied with Israel, would be a target, it became necessary to send more forces into the region to protect our bases, troops and ships, should Iran attack our forces. There's also the fact that Iran wasn't going to listen to the west informing them that they didn't want Iran to have nukes.
Iran having nukes and the subsequent ability to miniaturize them, would be globally tragic, as they are a major facilitator of terror across the globe.
