The Nordic model is widely regarded as a benchmark.

A number of comparative studies of economic and social performance have ranked the Nordics high. A common finding of cross-country comparisons is that the Nordics succeed better than other countries in combining economic efficiency and growth with a peaceful labour market, a fair distribution of income and social cohesion. The model is pointed to as a source of inspiration for other people in their search for a better social and economic system. On the other hand, many observers around the world are amazed that “the bumble-bee can fly” – that the Nordic economies can prosper and grow in spite of the presumably weak economic incentives associated with high tax wedges, a generous social security system and an egalitarian distribution of income. Critics have been looking for inner contradictions in the model and they have questioned its sustainability. Some argue that the economic performance of the Nordic countries is simply a result of exceptional and temporary advantages, bound to disappear over time. This report deals with the Nordic model, the reasons why it has worked in the past, and the challenges it is being subjected to in the future. Present economic and social trends, including globalization and demographic change, pose significant challenges to the model as we know it. The model will remain viable and successful only if the challenges and the need for reform are understood – and if action is taken. If you were wise you'd look at what they are doing and see what we can make work better for us. Our government is a disaster.

The first and primary problem for us to face and solve is our gov't. In polite terms, it's a mess and I wouldn't trust any of them with any more money than they're getting now. Don't give me any bullshit that is them not us, it's the whole fucking mess. Everybody wants their piece of the largesse, every politician wants to have a record of supporting their district or state, which of course leads to so much waste and abuse. The one thing I did notice about these Nordic countries is that they do not spend more than they take in, they find ways to work with the private sector to get things done. And right now the status quo does not look promising, I do think Trump is trying to work out deals with the business community, so IMHO that is a start. As opposed to the Democrats who are only interested in fucking them over. Will the political climate change here? Eventually maybe, but probably not until the next really bad recession or depression hits. And even then will the finger-pointing and demagoguery continue or even worsen? It seems our pols are more interested in power than in accomplishing things that are in our best interest instead of theirs. Which sorta lends itself into the idea that we need a viable 3rd party. Sweden for example, has several political parties that have to sort of coalesce into a majority governing body. Don't know if that'll work here or not, but our 2 major party system does kinda suck. Didn't mean to start a tangent away from the thread topic, but i do think our first order of business is to yes, drain that fucking swamp and right our federal gov't.

So a system based on free market economics works. What a surprise. If the Nordic countries are on the same level of economic freedom as the US, with higher tax rates and a lower standard of living...I think all the evidence we need is right there, right in front of our eyes. Why don’t we look to a country that’s scores top 3 in absolutely every single category one can think of for as long as we have measured such things for inspiration? That seems logical right? That country being Switzerland: economic freedom top 3, standard of living top 3, overall citizen happiness top 3, healthcare top 3, education top 3, safety, top 3, name a category, the Swiss are up there. They’re obviously doing something right. Why is it we want to lower our standard of living, when we have a clear cut example of what actually works, and has worked for a long ass time, and is actually what we’re partially based offf of?

Why is it Bernie can point to Nordic countries, who operate on free market economics, and then trash the free markets and propose policies that even the Nordic countries push away with a 10 foot pole because they’d cost triple the amount of money that’s actually circulating the globe within a decade. The Nordic countries are NOT democratic socialist countries. They have social progams larger is scale than our social programs, they are also just as economically free as we are, if not freeer. No where near what Bernie calls for.

What’s wrong with looking to the Swiss for inspiration, on what’s proven to work? They’ve been doing it for 500 years. Something is going right for them there.

It's illegal to spay or neuter your pet in those countries because it's considered "cruel." I think they will abort a human fetus right up to delivery, though.

A "fair distribution of income" LMAO!
Yes. Why should society actually work for everyone when you can create a banana republic.

Uneducated ignorant trumpkins are too vile to get it

Move to Chicago, they are considering a basic universal income of 500 bucks a month for 500 (correction, 1000 families) families. Maybe you'll get lucky and feel better about yourself.

Liberal socialism is a socialist political philosophy that incorporates liberal principles. Liberal socialismdoes not have the goal of completely abolishing capitalism and replacing it with socialism, but it instead supports a mixed economy that includes both private property and social ownership in capital goods.
