Texas county where campers died was denied money to boost warning systems TWICE

Lets forget the deaths, the floods, the politics etc...

Camp Mystic is 18 miles from Kerrville acccording to Google. The folks at the camp (and probably at hundreds if not thousands of other camps tonight) that has all these kids there, had--APPARENTLY--I’M NOT SURE--nobody who stayed up all night just to make sure things are okay?

Looking back this seems like it was pretty negligent just on it’s surface. I never went to camp...we were light years away from being able to afford to even think about sending anyone to camp. But if you were to have asked me if there is a requirement that someone be on watch the entire time, I would have said yes.

Yep...for 50+ summers, nothing will happen and the organizers will hae to pay someone to essentially do nothing other than stay awake. Tough.

This is what Republicans call “needless regulations”.

There was an active Flash Flood Watch since the previous afternoon ... that means "watch out for Flash Floods" ... in "Flash Flood Alley" ... none of the adults was watching ... none of the adults thought to move the girls from the lowest cabin ... during a Flash Flood Watch in "Flash Flood Alley" along a river prone to flash floods ...

Maybe there's a lesson to be learned here ... so this doesn't happen again ...

ETA: Local media reports Texas disaster teams were activated two days beforehand ... {Cite} ...

Yeah, we got them all the time. Nobody pays any attention to them. When I was in college, the instructor of my public speaking class told me that the medium is often the message. He grew up in the 60’s and when you saw a pair of military men getting out of a sedan in his neighborhood, you knew what was about to happen. Someone was going to be advised that their kid died in Vietnam. Maybe if someone was awake and this bulletin comes at 2AM...that changes the level of interest...maybe..

Nearly a decade before catastrophic flooding in south Texas killed at least 95 people, including 27 girls and counselors from a beloved summer camp, the state’s Division of Emergency Management denied requests from the county where the camp is held for a $1 million grant to improve its flood warning system.

Summer camps were top of mind during county leaders’ discussions of the project, meeting minutes show. Then-County Commissioner Tom Moser envisioned designating point people at each camp who would monitor a website and alert camp counselors and attendees if evacuation was needed.

The Division of Emergency Management did not answer USA TODAY's specific questions about why the county's applications were rejected.

Is that MAGA I smell in the air? Now, Texas is talking about duplicating DOGE at the state level. That may have to wait until most of the law suits that will be filed against the great MAGA state of Texas. Parents are morning the loss of their children. This is beyond sad.
The community down stream did it for $70,000. They made it a priority and raised the money themselves.

2 PM the previous afternoon ... don't you mean ... no one watched the evening news? ...

Flash Flood Watch was posted 15 hours before the tragedy ... how much more notice do you need? ...

MAGA is Trump. You need to get some help. Can't even morn for the loss of life. Instead, instant politicizing tragedy from you turds. Shameful, shameful, shameful.
REALLY?

Why is any money going to provide relief to illegal aliens for sex change and other drug and sex slave selling issues? So, FEMA will have money. That money wasted by Harris-Biden could go to helping United States citizens and not illegals.

I think we’re talking about 2 different things.

Yeah, it's their choice, and look what it got them.

People should be aware that this is happened because of how Texas, and other right wing religious states, do politics.

They should NOT hide behind "prayer".
What an asinine thing to say. People who believe in God don't hide behind prayer. I know that and I'm an agnostic. They take solace in prayer.

Well, I'd say this happens a lot in the US. The US has two party politics which is useless at dealing with things, because it stops voters from having oversight, and makes money the most important thing.

The rich don't want to spend money, so it doesn't get spent.

They are your overlords and your lives don't really matter.
I live in Florida. You know...the land of common sense?

Not asinine at all.

Look at what's happening.

Some kids died, people have two choice, the first is to look at the situation and try and make sure it doesn't happen again. The second is to not look at the situation. Prayer seems to be the default go to for certain people when there are disasters.

Why?

Because they lack control of the situation, so they try and get a feeling of control by praying to their god.

Every time something like happens, they pray to god, and it keeps happening and keeps happening. Nothing changes. So why are they doing it? To feel like they have some control over this situation. I pray, and my prayers will be heard by god, and god will make the lives of those victims better.

You might have a valid point if the only thing they did was pray but I think we both know that's not the case. Deeply religious people are generally also very community orientated. They're out there even now working to recover bodies and start the rebuilding process. Would you like to wager on who's better at that...the prayerful people in Texas or the people in LA? You know who's going to work together better to get the job done. You know who has leaders who are competent.

I thought it was the land of retired rich people.
You know what, Frigid? It used to be. Now it's the place that younger people are moving to in order to get away from the insanity that's taking place in far left controlled cities and States. We still have the rich people but we've got a lot of people who just want to live somewhere that they feel safe.

That is a lib media lie... in fact the alert system added personnel before the storm season... sometimes terrible shit happens... libtards really think the world began when they born....

Here's another idiot that needs the government to think and do everything for him.
I happen to have a smartphone with a radar app.
Now, if rain is forecast (it was) at a camp on the edge of a river - with a history of flooding - would you think twice about sending your kids there?
I know, all the planning and expenses to send the kids to camp and then to tell them "NO" is a tough one.
I watched the radar history of this area and there was definitely a lot of rain heading that way the day before.
Not necessarily the 1.8 billion gallons that fell - but definitely lotsa rain.
Blaming Trump for this disaster is absolutely asinine.
I didn't hear you fools blaming Biden for the numerous killed in the flooding of N. Carolina and E. Tennessee in the wake of Helene.

Community orientated, unless they have to pay taxes, in which case, they don't want to know.

They'd prefer kids die than pay taxes.

Yes, they're recovering bodies, but will they change things so it doesn't happen again? Doubtful.

That "insanity" as you call it is paying for things like early warning systems.....

Problem for me is, the whole of the US seems to be insane.

A change in the electoral system is required, PR is the only way to save the US

Texas has a large budget surplus because they don't spend money needlessly. California on the other hand has a huge budget deficit because they have no fiscal restraint. People are choosing to live in Texas because it's run by grown ups. It's also why so many businesses are moving there. It's obviously not the place for you, Frigid because you love a cradle to the grave entitlement society and Texas will never be that place. The people of Texas will address this problem and they'll do so while praying a lot.

"needlessly" as if an early warning system to save people's lives is "needless".

It's not run by grown ups, it's run by scam artists.
