Texas county where campers died was denied money to boost warning systems TWICE

That "insanity" as you call it is paying for things like early warning systems.....

Problem for me is, the whole of the US seems to be insane.

A change in the electoral system is required, PR is the only way to save the US
Gee, what do you think would happen if Gavin Newsome had to install an early warning system for California, Frigid? How big of a financial black hole do you think THAT would turn into? :)

Nearly a decade before catastrophic flooding in south Texas killed at least 95 people, including 27 girls and counselors from a beloved summer camp, the state’s Division of Emergency Management denied requests from the county where the camp is held for a $1 million grant to improve its flood warning system.

Summer camps were top of mind during county leaders’ discussions of the project, meeting minutes show. Then-County Commissioner Tom Moser envisioned designating point people at each camp who would monitor a website and alert camp counselors and attendees if evacuation was needed.

The Division of Emergency Management did not answer USA TODAY's specific questions about why the county's applications were rejected.

Is that MAGA I smell in the air? Now, Texas is talking about duplicating DOGE at the state level. That may have to wait until most of the law suits that will be filed against the great MAGA state of Texas. Parents are morning the loss of their children. This is beyond sad.
That river went from below normal level to 36 feet over/above in about 25 minutes, at four oh-dark in the morning.
This repeat from another thread brings science and reality over the political hype many present here.

Ignorance and stupidity, combined with hatred for anything, anyone conservative are a formula for false narratives and gross disinformation.

"The Texas Hill Country in the central part of the state is naturally prone to flash flooding due to the dry dirt-packed areas where the soil lets rain skid along the surface of the landscape instead of soaking it up. An area of cliffs and steep hills called the Balcones Escarpment is also a factor. "

After a flood watch notice midday Thursday, the National Weather Service office issued an urgent warning around 4 a.m. that raised the potential of catastrophic damage and a severe threat to human life. By at least 5:20 a.m., some in the Kerrville City area said water levels were getting alarmingly high. The massive rain flowing down hills sent rushing water into the Guadalupe River, causing it to rise 26 feet in just 45 minutes.

Here's what to know about the deadly flooding, the colossal weather system that drove it and ongoing efforts to identify victims.

This was an unpredictable event and the only real prevention would have been not to camp inside a gully, especially if rainy weather is in the forecast.

Funding cuts mentioned had no effect on this event.

Scam artists don't run budget surpluses...scam artists run budget deficits!

Depends where the money's going. If they're taking in taxes, and giving it to their friends instead of spending it on anything, then they're scam artists.

1) No income tax in Texas.

Income tax is a tax on the rich. Rich people will pay more than poor people for income tax, and sales tax is a tax on the poor.
Sales tax in Texas is 6.25%, groceries are not taxed, however poor people will still likely pay more, for things like their phone, and other daily costs.

2) No inheritance tax, meaning the rich are likely to keep a lot more of their money.

3) No corporate tax.

The surplus seems to have come from inflation, the more things cost, the more tax you pay

"
State Comptroller Glenn Hegar has said you can thank inflation for a lot of it; people paying more for goods and services means more sales tax pouring into the state.

Hegar also pointed to spikes in energy and gas prices for some of the surplus."

Whose paying for this? Rich people will end up paying the most, either through businesses, but poor people will be paying a larger percentage of what earn. Rich people will get a very good deal out of this.

And Texas has one of the lowest taxes per capita

12th lowest at $3,573 per capita.

And what do you get for your low taxes? Almost nothing, especially not warning systems.

Define "disaster" here.

The money wouldn't have stopped the flooding, but it would have meant when that flash flood happened, nobody would have been in that camp.

I don’t think you know what the word flash means.

Why does the State have to buy a siren for this town? They know they are in a flash flood zone. So just go and buy a siren if you think that's the answer. Hell, there are thousands of young girls going to that camp every year. Just add a dollar to the Camp's fees and buy that siren. And maybe they should also take a better look at where the girls at this campground are sleeping. Put the living quarters on higher ground and give them a fighting chance to escape. But right now, all we can do is pray for the victims and their families.

Watching another red state fail it's people.

Blue states fail their taxpayers on a daily basis, by lowering their standard of living with exorbitant taxation. They also are full of homeless and most are far into debt. Red states reward people with a higher standard of living for middle to upper class incomes.

At any rate, glad that you acknowledge that this was not Trump's fault in any way.

Our border is secure now. Fake spending? That was what was going on during the Biden Administration, Zinc! They said they were spending money to secure the border and they lied through their teeth! Trump and his team will fix THIS crisis just as they've methodically fixed one crisis after another from the complete dumpster fire that was Biden's four years!
Border is a Fed issue. DO you even know who Abbott is? I AM TALKING ABOUT STATE OF TEXAS GOVERNMENT AND FUNDING.

And how long would it take to get through the red tape to implement?

Texas has a HUGE budget surplus, you moron! The state of Texas government and funding is fantastic. You might want to worry about the budget deficits in California, Illinois and New York! :)

Thats my point. Why weren't they putting in sirens? Why don't they tend to state matters instead of border LARPing? They aren't doing their actual jobs.

It says denied over a decade ago in your story. So I guess we blame Obama on this one.

Seriously, Zinc? You're going to criticize the State that lives within it's budget while telling them they should be more like the ones that don't? Too funny...

They share the biggest section of border by State with the prime crossing point for illegals.

It's not LARPing, you sick ****.

I could care less what California does. I don't live there. I live here. I am telling them to do their jobs. 250 people are dead. God help when the next hurricane comes.
